Southport martial arts expert offers safety classes for woman after Sarah Everard murder

A martial arts expert from Southport has been inundated with requests after organising self protection classes for females following the Sarah Everard tragedy. Garry Phillips, who runs Shogun World on Bridge Street on the edge of Southport Town Centre, will run his classes for girls as young as 9 years old up to adult level. Garry, a Dad of five daughters, says that the courses will cover easy achievable moves that most ladies of all ages will feel comfortable developing and demonstrating. He said:- "This world is a frightening place for females. I am planning to coach a six week basic course at Shogun World in Southport from May for ladies self protection and security. Every female should feel safe and confident to react to physical confrontation especially in light of what happened to Sarah Everard and Libby Squire. Please message me if you are interested. Keep safe, stay alert."

The 1st course will start on:-

Tuesday, 18 May 2021, for younger females aged:- 9 to 14 yrs, 6pm to 6.45pm, at Shogun World.

7.30pm to 8.15pm all other females aged 15yrs+.

And then Saturday 22 May 2021, from:- 3.30pm to 4.15pm for females aged 15 yrs +.

This timing will allow those females who work on Saturdays a chance to attend and parents who want their young daughters to attend. Sarah Everard, a 33 year old marketing executive, disappeared after she walked home from a friend's flat in Clapham, south London, on the evening of 3 March this year. Tragically, her remains were later discovered in woodland near Ashford, Kent. Wayne Couzens, 48, a serving Metropolitan Police officer, is due to face trial this autumn for Sarah's kidnap and murder. Libby Squire, a 21 year old Hull University Student, was murdered on the night of 31 January 2019. Pawel Relowicz, 26, who had spent the night of 31 January 2019 driving around looking for a woman to attack, was convicted last month before being jailed for 27 years. The murders have led to renewed discussions about women's safety.

Garry said:- "I have delivered self defence to lots of groups, companies, Premier League security / stewards to name a few. I have 5 daughters so I know 1st hand the fears females are suffering at the moment. I plan to deliver basic understanding of personal protection and security to give females confidence when they are out and about plus life saving self defence if they are confronted by unsavoury characters. I have been coaching for 40 years, locally, nationally and internationally. I'm delivering the same course in Knowsley Village where approximately 55 females have contacted me. The Town Council has been very good offering me a perfect venue, a councillor has asked if I need a grant to help those who would like to attend but might not have the money, a printing company in Knowsley is supplying certificates and the Lord Mayer has been approached to present the certificates at the end of the course."

Garry's initial post in Stand Up For Southport has been seen by 6,000 people, with nearly 80 comments. 1 person wrote:- "I was thinking the other day it's about time there was a resurgence in women's self defence based classes. No idea why it seemed to disappear over the years."

Another added:- "Fantastic! This should be taught in all Schools for everyone."

The classes will take place at Shogun World, 26B Bridge Street, Southport. For more details please email:- info@shogunworld.Com or call:- 07885789195.

Marco Pierre White's Liverpool Restaurant Prepares To Open

A popular Liverpool restaurant is set to reopen its doors, on 12 April 2021, following the easing of Lockdown restrictions, where guests will be able to enjoy a meal outdoors. The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill, which is located at Hotel Indigo, on Chapel Street, Liverpool, is now looking forward to welcoming customers who have not been able to enjoy a meal out since Lockdown restrictions came into force in December 2020. Those wanting to go out can now book a table and look forward to a meal that's been curated by 1 of the UK's greatest chefs.

Ben Morcombe, General Manager said:- "There's no denying that the hospitality sector has been hit hard by this Pandemic, however we are determined to come out of this by hitting the ground running so that our guests can feel reassured we've done all we can to provide them with a safe dining environment. From 12 April 2020, guests will be able to enjoy a meal in our outdoor seating area, then from 17 May we'll be able to welcome guests indoors. We take great pride in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene, and we've taken every precaution so that those who dine with us can do so safe in the knowledge that all has been done to safeguard their health and that of the staff. Customers will notice that things may be a little different, as we have made some necessary changes to our restaurants based on advice from the Government, industry bodies and our own safety consultants. We're operating a reduced a la carte menu but the exacting standards expecting from 1 of the world's greatest chefs have not be compromised in any way. I truly believe there is a healthy appetite to dine out and we now want customers from across the Region to come and enjoy a relaxing meal out."
