North West Cancer Research and Brown Turner Ross join forces to support local cancer research

NORTH West Cancer Research is pleased to announce law firm, Brown Turner Ross as a sponsor of their annual Cycle of Hope ride. The event, which will take place on 4 July 2021, will start and finish at Southport Rugby Club and will offer participants either a gentle 60km route or a more challenging 60 mile course. All money raised from the challenge will support life-saving cancer research and education projects in the North West. Alistair Richards, CEO North West Cancer Research said:- "On behalf of the charity, I would like to thank the team at Brown Turner Ross for their support for Cycle of Hope. This year has been tough for everyone, especially people who are undergoing or waiting for cancer treatment so research into better and kinder treatments has never been more vital. We hope as many cyclists as possible will join us to show their support for life saving research!"

Law firm Brown Turner Ross operate from offices, in both Liverpool and Southport. They were established back in 1884 and today offer a comprehensive range of legal services to individuals and business clients. A team of 8 colleagues and friends from the firm will join the hundreds of cyclists on the day, taking on the fight against cancer. In addition to the firm's sponsorship, the team are hoping to raise over a ₤1,000 and have a number of fundraising activities planned in the run up to the cycle. Sam Bushell, Managing Director of Brown Turner Ross, said:- "Cycle of Hope is a fantastic event to be a part of and we are proud to support North West Cancer Research and its mission of a cancer free future for the Region. Many of our employees have signed up to take part and those who haven't will be supporting in whatever way we can; there will definitely be a few Brown Turner Ross faces cheering on the cyclists in July 2021! After a year where everyone's purse strings have been tight, this is a great opportunity for people from across the Region to come together and do what we can, whether that is getting on your bike or donating."

North West Cancer Research is an independent charity dedicated to putting the Region's cancer needs 1st by funding pioneering research and education to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer. Entries for the year's Cycle of Hope are now open and cost just ₤20 per person to enter, with a minimum fundraising requirement of ₤30. All participants will receive a medal. 1 of the last remaining surviving D Day Landing veterans has celebrated 100 at the Empire Restaurant

ON Wednesday, 30 June 2021, Signaller Harry Howorth, from the Shropshire Light Infantry, who survived D Day Landing, celebrated his 100th Birthday at Southport's Empire Restaurant, on Neville Street.

His family told us how Harry Howorth survived the D Day Landing, despite nearly drowning when pitched into sea when the landing craft was knocked sideways by the sea on Sward Beach. Because of the weight of his standard equipment plus the radio and batteries he could not swim and would have drowned, but he was rescued by another soldier (name unknown) who dived back from the beach. When asked why he did it (they were under heavy fire) the soldier just said:- "I don't know..." Harry went on to serve all throughout the war, but never forgot his hero, so he never applied for any of the many medals he was entitled to. He was finally persuaded to accept the French Legion Of Honour in 2018. Then in June 2019 he attended the reunion in France. Harry now has not only a daughter, but a Great, Great Grandson, Lukas, making 5 generations alive because of 1 act of bravery.

Sadly, for his 100th, the family had planned a dinner party at a local Hotel, with 35 guests, well below 50% of the available seating, which appeared to be within Government guidelines, but the owners of the Hotel were advised that it was not, and could mean a fine of thousands of pounds. The party was cancelled. We are told that in the afternoon he did manage to hold a small garden party, outside his apartment, that was attended by some of his neighbours.

Harry's favourite restaurant is the Empire in Neville Street which specialises in Chinese cuisine, so his daughter Edna English and her husband Jimmy arranged for a celebratory meal there on the evening 30 June 2021, the big day for Harry, His girlfriend Maureen Hall and themselves. "Lilly, the owner of the Empire Restaurant pulled out all the stops to make it a grand event, including:- wines and champagne all at her own expense. All the staff made the staff made sure it was a superb experience. What a wonderful way to end the day." said Edna English.
