Over ₤27,000 raised for young adult carers support project in Wigan

WIGAN and Leigh Young Carers have received ₤27,578 in funding from People's Health Trust with money raised by the Health Lottery North West for a 2 year project, aimed at supporting young adult carers based in the borough of Wigan. Through this project, Wigan and Leigh Young Carers are dedicated to supporting young carers and young adult carers aged between 14 to 24 years old, particularly those who are most isolated and have limited social, educational and employment opportunities. According to a survey by the Carers Trust, 59% of young adult carers say their mental health is worse as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The 2 year project is aimed at providing respite peer support groups and residential breaks promoting friendships and encouraging members to achieve their full potential through engagement and training.

The project offers over a 100 young adult carers holistic wellbeing support and training opportunities for the basic skills they need to apply in real life. The sessions include work training programs, which include CV writing tips, life skills and improving self esteem. These programs are designed alongside local Schools, Colleges and Universities to ensure the young carers are given the best advice they need to succeed, as the survey results also show that 78% of young adult carers are more worried about their future now as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, some of the other sessions include 1 to 1 support discussions, sessions for physical and emotional wellbeing nutritional advice and much more. Furthermore, the project also aims to build the young carers' morale through fun activities as 69% of the young adult carers feel less connected since the pandemic. Activities include cooking lessons, quiz nights and outdoor walks; all aimed at alleviating their stress and giving the young adult carers the same life experiences and opportunities as other young adults that they might have missed on while caring for others.

1 of the young adult carers enrolled in the project shares their experience with Wigan and Leigh Young Carers, saying:- "It's really fun and the activities are very exciting. I feel very welcome. It is very open minded and always lacks judgement. Thanks for being here through all our dark and rough times."

Commenting on the funding from People's Health Trust, Wigan and Leigh Young Carers Finance and Grants Admin, Paul Carroll said:- "The funding has really helped us sustain and expand the project, we are now able to accommodate more young adult carers and provide them with all the support sessions they need. Additionally, the funding has helped us to deliver wellbeing packages during the pandemic which included wellbeing activities and items to make them smile to ensure we are in contact with our Young Carers on a regular basis during these unprecedented times."

Martin Ellice, Joint Managing Director of the Health Lottery, said:- "We are delighted to support the Wigan and Leigh Young Carers team on their project. It is a great initiative for young adult carers to have the support of such a dedicated program and receive the support they need while supporting others."

World's Strongest Disabled Man Completes Double Challenge for Charity

PETE Linnett, 3x World's Strongest Disabled Man, successfully completed a 100 mile hand cycle, from Leicester to Skegness, this summer, in aid of the charity Spinal Research. The 56 year old, who was born with spina bifida and uses crutches to walk, completed the event, on 15 August 2020, with 6 close friends. The man from Glen Parva said:- "During lockdown, my friend and I wanted to keep fit and were regularly cycling 18 to 25 miles, so we decided to do the ride as a fundraiser. It snowballed from there and ended up with 7 of us doing it."

They set off from the clock tower in Leicester at 6am and were greeted throughout the ride. People came out to give them drinks and Tesco and Coop provided drinks and energy bars and Graham Goode Motors provided the support vehicle which took them home. On why he wanted to raise money for Spinal Research, the former British Paralympian said:- "It is a cause close to my heart because I know there are a lot of people worse off than me. I'm 1 of the lucky few with my condition, who can still walk, and I show this by supporting those who can't. I swore I'd never EVER do it again, but I am too easily persuaded!"

But it didn't stop there! Having just completed his hand cycle challenge, Pete quickly set his mind to a new objective, motivated in knowing that his hard work would greatly help the spinal cord injury community. Pete, who is also a 4x World Bench Press Champion then went on to bench press a set of 60kg continually over a period of 6 hours, in aid of Spinal Research. He was joined by some of the world's strongest disabled athletes. The group's target was 72 sets of 10 repetitions at 60kg, which took the group a total of 6 hours and 30 minutes to complete. "I'm thinking of making August Bank Holiday Saturday 'International benching day,' the athlete joked upon completion of the incredible challenge. It was awesome doing this with great friends from the disabled strongman world." added Darren Greenfield, who joined the world champion in the fundraising event.

This takes the total raised by Pete to over ₤5,000 for Spinal Research. The next challenge sees Pete going to Iceland and defend his World Champion Title! "Pete is a true gentleman and we are all so proud at Spinal Research to have Pete representing the charity and showing what is possible if you put your mind to it. As well as inspiring others to support Spinal Research he has raised thousands of pounds for spinal cord injury research, giving hope to so many people affected by paralysis." Louise Wheeler, Community Fundraising Manager, at Spinal Research.
