Be clear on cancer, never ignore a persistent cough

LUNG cancer is 1 of the most common and serious types of cancer. This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Doctors, in Sefton, are explaining the differences between:- 'COVID cough' and symptoms of lung cancer, to make sure that we are clear on cancer and help to treat cancer early. At the start of the Covid19 outbreak, there was a steep drop in the number of patients referred for investigations and appointments for suspected cancer. Since then we've seen an improvement in the number of referrals as more people speak to their GP with concerns about signs and symptoms of cancer. Finding and treating lung cancer at an early stage can save lives.

Dr Debbie Harvey, Macmillan GP and cancer clinical lead at NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said:- "There are often no signs or symptoms of lung cancer in the early stages, but earlier detection can save lives so don't delay getting the help you need. You should speak to your GP if you have a new persistent cough for over 3 weeks, or are coughing up blood, or have new breathlessness, or unexplained tiredness or weight loss, or an ache or pain when breathing or coughing. These symptoms do not mean you definitely have cancer but do need to be checked. We know that a persistent cough is also a common symptom of Covid19, but the other symptoms are generally not connected to Coronavirus. If you've got a history of smoking, including passive smoking, or been exposed to certain chemicals and substances like asbestos that are known to increase your risk of lung cancer it's especially important to get the above symptoms checked... If you have a new, persistent cough or one of the other Coronavirus symptoms; a high temperature or a change or loss in your sense of taste or smell; you and everyone in your household and support bubble should self isolate. Book a Coronavirus test as soon as possible online or call:- 119. If you are unwell with possible COVID advice and support is available by calling:- 111 or your GP practice."

Dr Graeme Allan, Macmillan GP and cancer clinical lead at NHS Southport and Formby CCG said:- "Understandably, many people are anxious about attending face to face assessments or treatments at the moment due to the Pandemic. We would like to reassure people that extra measures have been put in place to keep patients and staff safe. Although Coronavirus has changed the way that GP practices work, your GP is still there for you. Your practice may arrange a call or video consultation in the 1st instance and will see you face to face in a safe way if necessary. If you are asked to come into your GP practice, it's really important that you attend; unless you have symptoms of Covid19 or are self isolating."

Mayors and Irish ministers renew commitment to boost links between Ireland and North West

THE Mayors of the Liverpool City Region and Greater Manchester met with the Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister at a virtual summit on 16 November 2020 to renew their commitment to strengthening trade and cooperation between the 2 City Regions and Ireland. The meeting came as Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that a new Consulate General for the North of England will open in Manchester next year. The Consulate General will cover the North West, the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber.

This week Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, and Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, met virtually with Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The meeting followed a visit by Tánaiste Varadkar to Manchester last year, during which he met with the Mayor of Greater Manchester.  The 3 reiterated their ambition to build further trade and investment links between the Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester and Ireland, and discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in areas including:- sport, culture, and technological innovation.

The Mayors were joined by Minister for Exports at the Department of International Trade, Graham Stuart, and also met separately with Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss future cooperation and the strong people to people links, that already exist between the 2 City Regions and Ireland.  The meetings were chaired by the Irish Ambassador to the UK, H E Adrian O'Neill and UK Ambassador to Ireland, H E Paul Johnston, and attended by representatives from the Irish Government.

Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:- "The historical, cultural and trade links between the Liverpool City Region and Ireland are deep and long standing, and we are determined to build on them as we enter a Post Brexit world. As a Western facing port our City Region is of crucial strategic importance to the UK's future trade policy. There is no better demonstration of this than today's commitment to forge even deeper ties with our nearest neighbours. The Liverpool City Region does ₤430m total trade with Ireland, which is the 8th highest of all our trading partners, with over 650 of our business exporting to Ireland and over 400 importing. This important task force will ensure meaningful dialogue on how together we can shape the Post Brexit world and maximise our shared economic and cultural opportunities"

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said:- "Greater Manchester has always been a global City -Region, and it's right that we should be looking to the future and building on the strong relationships we have around the world; including with our closest neighbours. Ireland is one of Greater Manchester's most important markets, with year on year growth in exports, while a whole host of Irish companies have invested in our City Region. Many of us here trace our roots back across the Irish Sea, and in normal times Ireland is amongst our biggest tourism destinations. As we move into a new phase of UK Ireland relations we want the North West to be right at the forefront. We are so pleased that the new Consulate General for the North will be based in Manchester, strengthening those historical bonds of friendship and helping us take advantage of new opportunities that will bring mutual benefit to our people and places."

Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste and Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, said:- "Ireland has a long standing relationship with the UK and we are committed to maintaining that relationship over the months and years ahead. The historic, business and cultural links between Ireland, Manchester and Liverpool are really strong and go back decades. We are committed to strengthening these existing ties and building new partnerships, in areas such as infrastructure, housing, clean energy and transport, healthcare and manufacturing. Our meeting concluded with agreement that we would keep in touch at both political and official level throughout 2021 as we continue to address the challenges posed by Brexit and Covid19. The proposed new Consulate General for the North of England will play an important role in this regard, working closely with Enterprise Ireland's office in Manchester which was opened in 2019 to help Irish companies seek opportunities and partnerships across the North of England."

Graham Stuart, Exports Minister at the Department for International Trade, said:- "I'm so pleased to join the mayors of Liverpool City Region and Greater Manchester in this virtual visit to Ireland. Our mayors have a major role to play in galvanising local businesses to take advantage of international trade and grow jobs and prosperity as a result. Almost ₤2bn worth of exports went from the North West to Ireland last year, highlighting just how significant they are to each other. The Government will support every part of the United Kingdom to level up its trading performance. Our new Export Growth Plan, which I launched last month, provides ₤16.5 million in grants and 30 new international trade advisors for the North. Working with Andy and Steve we will strengthen trade ties with Ireland and help businesses in the North West take advantage of global opportunities and our support."
