Merseyside politicians unite to slam Merseyrail’s treatment of heroic cleaners

A cross Party coalition of Merseyside's politicians has written an open letter to Merseyrail boss Andy Heath calling on him to step in and sort out disputes on 2 of its cleaning contracts and pledging to campaign for heroic cleaners and other key workers to be brought in house across the Region.

The open letter, signed by 7 Labour MPs, Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson and 49 Labour, Green, Liberal Democrat and Conservative Councillors from across Merseyside, condemns Merseyrail for:- "presiding over the appalling mistreatment of this heroic workforce" after cleaners employed by Stadler were threatened with:- "fire and rehire" attacks on their working conditions and as cleaners employed by Mitie are engaged in a long running dispute over poverty wages and poor working conditions.

The letter calls on Mr Heath to:- "to intervene now and resolve these disputes, which are bringing shame on the city region’ and to bring the Mitie cleaners into direct employment when the contract ends in January. The signatories also ‘pledge to campaign for the insourcing of contracts like these across our public services."

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said:- "Our members will welcome this fantastic support from Merseyside’s politicians and I hope Merseyrail recognise that the writing is on the wall. As we’ve pointed out before, they've done very nicely in recent years, distributing more than ₤150 million to their shareholders since taking up the contract, but their treatment of sub contracted cleaners who have put their lives on the line throughout the pandemic is truly shameful. Outsourcing has seen the super exploitation of low paid, essential workers, in search of profit. Merseyrail need to get a grip on this situation, put their hands in their ample pockets, sort out the disputes and bring their cleaners in house."

Sefton Cabinet approved more than ₤2 million in Children’s Social Care roles

COUNCILLORS at a Sefton Council Cabinet meeting have just approved more than ₤2 million to fund new roles in its Children's Social Care Department. This investment in staff is in addition to an extra ₤7 million, Sefton Council committed to children’s social care in its budget earlier this year. Cllr Mhairi Doyle MBE, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:- "We are currently facing levels of demand for our children’s social care services and this has been intensified by the effects of Covid19 Pandemic, which has hit some parts of Sefton particularly hard. Today's agreement of an extra ₤2 million of additional investment in new roles over the coming two years will be key to enabling us to make further improvements to children’s social care in Sefton and represents the latest step in our improvement journey following an OFSTED visit earlier in 2021."

Since March this year, Sefton Council has appointed a number of additional staff to its Children's Social Care service have been recruited and has established a transformation team support by the Department for Education (DfE). Cllr Mhairi Doyle added:- "We acknowledged the issues and challenges raised through the OFSTED inspection and immediately started work to make the improvements needed to address them. We have already put in place a new interim Executive Director of Children's Social Care and Education to ensure the service’s management is focused and to drive the development work. Our Children's Social Care staff are committed and skilled, but are facing levels of demand unlike anything we've known before. We are working to support them in providing the high quality, responsive service that families, children and young people across Sefton have every right to expect and which we are committed to delivering. I'm confident that recruitment these new posts agreed today combined with the valuable support being provided by the Department of Education, will enable us to achieve that commitment."

Sefton's Director of Public Health writes to parents and guardians

SEFTON Council’s Director of Public Health, Margaret Jones, has written to parents and guardians across the Borough to remind them about the arrangements in place for returning to School. In her letter she explained that before the the start of term, each Sefton School has completed a risk assessment and identified specific measures for their settings.

Sefton's Schools will be following the national guidance. This means:- 'pupil bubbles' and social distancing / mixing measures have been removed and pupils are no longer be required to wear face coverings within School, although it is recommended they be worn in crowded and enclosed places.

Regular hand washing, personal hygiene and ventilation is also being recommended to help stop the spread of Covid19. Should case numbers rise substantially in a School, or any other educational setting, some control measures need to be temporarily reintroduced.

Although NHS Test and Trace are now responsible for contact tracing of all positive cases, if a child or young person tests positive for Covid19, their School should still be informed.

Young people are no longer being advised to isolate if they are identified as a close contact of a Covid19 case, but they will be asked to take a PCR test. If the PCR result is positive, the individual will then be required to self isolate. All known contacts of positive Covid19 cases should be reported to NHS Test and Trace, no matter vaccination status or age.

The letter reminds parents and guardians that if a child develops Covid19 symptoms, they should book an appointment for them to have a PCR test and that the child should not come into School whilst they are awaiting the test results, even if they feel better. If their test result is negative, they can return to School. If their result is positive, they should continue to isolate and follow public health advice.

Appointments for PCR tests can be booked at:- Gov.UK/Coronavirus or by calling:- 119.

Mrs Jones' letter also encourages parents, carers, secondary pupils and college students to take regular rapid lateral flow (LFD) tests. Taking LFD tests twice a week remains one of the most effective ways to reduce transmission of COVID-19.

Free rapid tests are available through:- Schools, Colleges and Nurseries, for everyone who attends them or works at them. Primary age pupils in Year 6 or below do not need to do testing if they do not have symptoms or are not a contact of a positive Covid19 case.

She also reminds readers that vaccination remains the best protection against the virus and encourages everyone eligible to get both doses as soon as possible.

Margaret Jones said:- "We appreciate that this is a challenging time for parents, guardians, pupils and students as well as for Teachers and School staff and Sefton Council would like to thank them for their support in keeping the Borough's helping keep our schools open and safe. We also know it’s a lot to take in so we have set up some Frequently Asked Questions on our website which can be found at:- Sefton.Gov.UK/Schools-FAQs. Finally, I like to wish all the Borough's pupils and students every success in this coming academic year."

Afghan Support in Sefton

AN appeal has been launched across Sefton to help families from Afghanistan who may find themselves resettling in the Borough in the coming weeks and months. Sefton Council, Sefton Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) and Sefton 4 Good are working in partnership to coordinate a Borough wide response. This will be similar to those taking place throughout the UK, to help Afghan people starting a new life in the North West. All funds raised through the Sefton Afghan Appeal will be used to purchase bespoke items including appropriate clothing, toys and household items such as kitchen utensils. Donations of newly bought goods, sealed clothing, children's shoes and toiletries are also being gratefully received and will form a:- 'welcome pack' to be distributed to families. Due to Covid19 control measures, organisers are unable to accept donations of 2nd hand goods or un-sealed items. The Borough wide appeal will see 8 locations across Sefton set up as donation drop off points, while a dedicated fundraising platform has been created where kind hearted residents can contribute.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council's Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said:- "We are all too aware of the devastation and conflict taking place right now in Afghanistan and, like many others across the UK, we are doing all we can in Sefton to help support displaced families who have been forced to flee their homeland. The Council and its partners at Sefton CVS and Sefton 4 Good have immediately sprung into action and launched a dedicated fundraising platform to help in these coming weeks and months. We know the people of Sefton is a welcoming Borough that cares for their fellow humans in need and I am confident that our communities will give as much as they possibly can do the Sefton Afghan Appeal, whether that be via a financial contribution or via a donation of much needed goods and clothing. Sefton Council have offered 8 of its buildings to act as donation points for the appeal and we continue to work closely with partners to ensure we are doing everything in our power to help. Please, if you can, give generously to this appeal and lend your support to these families many of whom have arrived with very few belongings but the clothes they are wearing."

Angela White OBE, Chief Executive at Sefton CVS, said:- "Following the devastating situation in Afghanistan, Sefton CVS are working in partnership with Sefton Council and other voluntary, community and faith (VCF) organisations to coordinate and provide welcome to Afghan families resettling in Sefton over the coming weeks. The Sefton Afghan Appeal will enable us to provide bespoke items to directly support families when they arrive in Sefton. We are also encouraging local residents to donate newly bought sealed items, such as clothing and toiletries, which can be dropped off at a number of designated donation points across the borough. We know how generous and welcoming our local residents and businesses are, and your vital support will make such a difference in resettling Afghan families into our communities."
