Lockdown protesters:- "selfish and irresponsible"
A dispersal zone in the City
Centre and South Liverpool, ahead a protest that has seen 16 people had been
arrested. The vast majority of people on Merseyside and within the Liverpool
City Region have been abiding by lockdown rules and also huge waves of people
have also got tested, order to help curb the spread of Coronavirus. Sadly this
has all been put into jeopardy by a few hundred people. We have had unofficially
confirmed reports that many who descended on 2 location within the City, despite
the rules banning the protest. Those attending the protest marches within the
City Centre, in opposition to lockdown, have been called by Merseyside Police
as:- "selfish and irresponsible." This has also been wildly
repeated by people all over social media, angry that the area's efforts to cut
the infection rate have been possibly damaged, as well as the areas reputation.
In a statement, Merseyside Police said:- "We continue to thank the vast
majority of people who are abiding by the lockdown rules and continuing to say
at home to keep us all safe. Unfortunately a small number of selfish and
irresponsible individuals have chosen to gather in the City Centre today,
putting themselves, their families, the public and our staff at risk from the
Global Pandemic. We have, so far, made 16 arrests for public order breaches of
Coronavirus regulations. We would like to remind people that there is currently
a dispersal zone in Liverpool City Centre and parts of Liverpool. The order,
which h was brought in following a gathering last weekend, which was in
contravention of Coronavirus legislation, has been authorised in order to
protect lives, prevent the spread of Coronavirus and keep people safe. Liverpool
is now in the second week of a mass testing scheme in a bid to combat
Coronavirus and most people are choosing to do the responsible thing in order to
protect themselves, their families and friends."
