SOUTHPORT FC V WORKSOP TOWN FC
Saturday 1st November 2003
Photographs By Sally Devine

SOUTHPORT came into this game still missing the services of key players such as Lee Ashcroft, Steve Soley, both injured with hamstring and groin problems respectively.

The first half of the game was dour both sides having few chances as the rain clouds gathered over a darkened Haig Avenue.

Robert Pell for Worksop, making his return to Southport, went close with a header that shaved the post. Peter Thomson in return for the Sandgrounders hit a fierce shot which went wide with the goalkeeper well beaten.

The visitors opened the scoring on 36 minutes, Steve Dickinson in the Southport goal, failed to collect a corner and Mark Haran was on hand to head home to make it 0 to 1.

After the break both the weather and the match improved. And the introduction of Lee Mulvaney on for Lee Clitheroe provided the equaliser. With virtually his first touch shooting low into the net.

Southport conceded a free kick in a dangerous position and number 9 Simeon Bambrook scored to put Worksop ahead again.

Graeme Atkinson left the Sandgrounders down to 10 men temporarily as he departed the field clutching his hamstring, Liam Maguire being his replacement.

Peter Thomson equalised for Southport from close range after good work from Peter Wright.

Both sides pushed forward looking for the winner. The referee played 5 added minutes, but it was the visitors who claimed the victory in the 93rd minute. A corner for Worksop set up Haran to head in and put Worksop above the Snadgrounders in the Unibond league table.

The nest 2 games for Southport will provide stiff opposition, Barrow on Tuesday night and Hucknell Town on Saturday 8th November, the latter side currently league leaders.
