MAYOR'S DASH FOR CHARITY 2003
Picture:- Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley; Councillor and Mrs Michael Murphy.

LOCAL people of Kirkby had fun and games at the new Poundland store opening on 31st October 2003.

Hundreds of local shoppers packed into the store at Unit 1a Newton Gardens, Kirkby to witness the official opening by the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley; Councillor and Mrs Michael Murphy. A store trolley dash was organised as part of the opening celebrations and the Mayor and Mayoress had just 1 minute to get around the store and load their trolley with Poundland goodies. All proceeds from the dash have been used as raffle prizes and given to the Mayor's Charity Appeal; Knowsley Young Carers and the Knowsley Section of Scope.

Poundland Store Manager, Paul Chapman said:- "We were absolutely inundated with people who wanted to see the trolley dash. Over £84.00 was raised for the Mayor's Charity Appeal. It was a fun day which both customers and staff enjoyed."

Poundland is an award winning 'one price' value retailer and offers everything in store for only £1.00. The store retails items such as Batteries, Gardening, Pet Care, Food and Drink, Stationery, Sun and Optical Glasses, Glassware, Christmas Products, Tools, Figures, Household goods, Toiletries, Artificial Flowers, Giftware, Clothing, Electrical and Audio, Kitchenware, Pictures, Frames, Toys and Textiles.

35 people from Kirkby and the surrounding areas have successfully been recruited to run the 260 sqm store.

The stores have been recently redesigned to include colour coded and clearly marked racking. Whilst using Mediterranean colours to add warmth, Poundland aims to ensure their stores offer a highly efficient retail environment. Poundland's 'single price retail' of £1.00, appeals to a broad spectrum of people looking for a bargain or simply discovering a new and fun shopping experience.

NEW BOSS IN SEARCH FOR SOUTHPORT BROKERS

A NEW appointment at one of the UK's largest independent insurance brokers could spell good news for brokers in Southport.

Opus insurance has announced the appointment of Keith Runciman as Group Development Director at its Northern HQ in Bolton and given him the task of building its client base in the Southport area.

Opus, which is seeking to develop its business in the region, is responding to the industry challenges, and in his new role Keith is looking at Southport's small to medium-sized brokers as possible acquisition targets.

Rovers' young stars tackle technology

SOME of Tranmere Rovers Football Club's young players tackled the latest driver training technology at the new hi-tech driving center for driving opened on November 5 in Birkenhead.

Four youth team players tried out the latest BSM driver training technology while picking up a few motoring tips on a day off from their grueling training sessions.

Tranmere Rovers' Youth Development Manager Warwick Rimmer said:- "This is a great opportunity for the young players to develop a safe and responsible attitude to car ownership and use."

Magnificent seven fly the flag

LIVERPOOL is celebrating a record after seven of the city's parks and gardens have been included in the list of winners of the 2003 Green Flag Award.

Council Leader, Councillor Mike Storey, "Liverpool is becoming a greener and cleaner and this is national acknowledgement of the major improvements in our parks which has taken place in the last couple of years. It is a tremendous achievement."

Nearly 200 green spaces across England and Wales have achieved the standard - a huge increase on the first year of the award scheme, 1997, when only seven Green Flags were awarded. In total, 182 green spaces - 57 more than the previous year - will be flying a Green Flag throughout 2004.

With more sporting activities, and through the cities new 'Do the Right Thing' campaign, the council is encouraging and enabling children to pursue a more active and healthy lifestyle. These awards will allow the schools to get more children and hopefully more of the local community to participate in sport.
