- Art Takes Off at John Lennon Airport
-
LEFT luggage takes on a new meaning as Liverpool John Lennon Airport tomorrow launches a 3 day exhibition in its terminal building by North West artist Jude Macpherson entitled 'Pastures New'.
The exhibition is an installation consisting of a series of suitcases all of which contain living grass, amongst which grow tiny mushrooms.
The exhibition is being staged as a trial by the Airport in conjunction with the curator, The Airport Agency, with the intention of offering other local artists the opportunity to display their work to a wide cross section of the public who may be travelling through the Airport. If successful, the Airport hopes to host other exhibitions as a way of promoting the City's European Capital of Culture status in 2008 and is seen as an ideal way to highlight the region's creative art scene to existing and future passengers from throughout the region and Europe.
Jude, a graduate of Liverpool University uses the suitcases as a symbol of travel, whilst at the same time standing for the mental luggage people carry with them. The suitcases are old and carry individual characteristics and are seen as intriguing in terms of the journeys they may have been taken on in the past. The grass represents new pastures and trying new experiences. Viewers passing by will be invited by the artist to write their comments on individual luggage tags.
Jude Macpherson commented; "I hope to provoke interest from passengers who probably wouldn't expect to see something like this at an airport. Knowing the strong cultural strengths of the region and the nature of my work, I thought there would be no better place to display it than here at Liverpool John Lennon Airport."
Neil Pakey, Liverpool John Lennon Airport's Managing Director commented;
"There is an obvious opportunity for John Lennon Airport to become a catalyst for public art. We are keen to position ourselves as an innovative and creative airport, supporting regional public art,"
he continued.
The exhibition is open to the public on 7th, 8th & 9th November.

- Students help to brighten Southport Hospital
PATIENTS AND VISITORS are enjoying brighter visits to Southport & Formby District General Hospital, thanks to a group of students with learning difficulties who have used their artistic talents to decorate the hospital corridors.
The colourful drawings have been put together for display by a group of former students from Arden College in Derby Road.
All the students aged 17 to 28 have learning difficulties or disabilities and put great effort into their work, so it was a real honour for them when the Trust agreed to have the pieces of art displayed at Southport Hospital.
Geoff Spence, an Art Teacher at Arden College and who led this particular project, said:- "It is a major achievement for the students to have their work showcased at the hospital. The group all has learning disabilities but have overcome their difficulties to put together a creative exhibition with very little guidance."
Those who visit Southport Hospital can now look forward to being greeted by colourful images.
Jonathan Parry, Chief Executive of the Trust, said:- "We would like to thank the students for nominating the hospital to display their artwork. The exhibition looks fantastic and the students should be very proud of themselves."
- HORSEY 'TAIL' AT BIRKENHEAD PUB OPENING
A dray horse has established itself as the 'mane' attraction after the re-opening of The Stirrup in Arrowe Park Road..
After a three-week refurbishment by the Sizzling Pub Co, The Stirrup has been given a fresh look.
New Sizzling Pub Co landlord, Barrie Spetch, said:- "Because of the horse connection to the pub's name we thought it would be great to get a real horse to our opening. And we especially wanted a dray horse to come along because this is how beer used to be delivered to pubs."
He added:- "The way in which the pub has been redesigned inside means regulars, as well as new customers will all have their favourite spot, whether that's at the bar, or catching up with friends for a quick bite to eat."
