Security for Europe's fastest growing Airport

ADT, the UK's leading provider of electronic fire and security solutions, has delivered a vital new security system to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The contract was funded partly by a Home Office Crime and Protection grant in recognition of the importance of airport security, and partly by the Airport owners, Peel Holdings plc.

The security system, which incorporates 70 CCTV cameras, infrared fence protection and an update of the Airport's access control system, offers protection against car park vandalism and crime, pick-pocketing, smuggling and terrorism in the wake of 9/11.

The security upgrade is the latest in a range of improvements made to the Airport, which has been deemed the fastest growing regional airport in Europe.

Over the last five years, the Airport has received some £52.5 million worth of investment, and tripled in size from 8000 sq ft to 24,000 sq ft.

Andy Brown, facilities planner at Liverpool John Lennon Airport explains the Airport's security requirements:- "Security is of the utmost importance to any airport, and as the fastest growing airport in Europe, it is essential, that Liverpool John Lennon Airport has vigilant security systems operating in all areas, especially in light of 9/11 and the terrorism we have experienced in recent years.

The sheer increase in the infrastructure of the Airport and volume of passenger throughput, estimated at 3.2 million, prompted a complete upgrade and expansion of our security systems.

ADT studied our specification in depth and was able to provide a CCTV system which exactly fitted our needs, updating and expanding our original system and making the change from analogue to a 24-hour digital system.

They were also contracted to maintain and update our access control system to authorise staff to access secured zones. This was for both air-side areas, to be accessed only by aircraft employees, and for land-side zones, used by catering and retail staff.

The access system links into the CCTV system, triggering response alarms and alerting cameras to focus on areas attracting attention from unwanted guests.

ADT won the contract on a combination of factors, they offered cost-effective solutions, while providing added-value with state-of-the-art equipment, which was easy to use, and the provision of ongoing maintenance."

The security systems provided for the Airport system were devised and implemented by Operations Manager, John Jones, and Sales Consultant, Barry Juggins of the ADT Liverpool branch.

John Jones, Operations Manager, for ADT Liverpool, said:- "We and in particular, Barry, have built up a good relationship with Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The security systems provided are user friendly, yet sophisticated and offer protection against crime and associated risks, which is exactly what was specified in the tender brief."

SHOWCASING SOUTHPORT

TOURISM officers will be showcasing Southport's many events, attractions and new developments when they attend the biggest travel trade fair in the world next week.

For the first time this year Southport and Liverpool will be joining forces on the stand with Chester, Manchester, Blackpool and Cumbria to give visitors information on the diversity of the regional tourism product. The region will be exhibiting under the 'England's North West' banner.

World Travel Market is a four-day event that is fully representative of the global travel and tourism industry and starts at ExCel in London on Monday (November 10th).

During the event Southport will be launching its new Southport Short Breaks and Accommodation Guide for 2004/5, the publication key to attracting the five million people who visit the resort every year.

Lord Fearn, Sefton's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, will be officially unveiling the publication at the impressive stand in London on Tuesday.

He said:- "World Travel Market is the tourism industry's 'must attend' travel trade fair. It is the perfect opportunity to launch the guide which is one of the resort's main marketing tools in helping to boost the local economy through tourism by more than £180 million a year.

Thousands of people attend this exhibition every year so it is essential that we promote all our tourism products including golf, conferences and events as well as the huge amount of investment and new developments taking place in the town."

During the event tourism officers will also be officially launching a new campaign to market Merseyside as one of Europe's golfing hotspots. The £100,000 drive will promote the area as a major destination for short golfing breaks using the branding 'England's Golfing Coast'. Sefton boasts many of the top courses including Royal Birkdale and Hillside.

Letters to the Editor:- Pensions...

Dear Sir

Government figures show that a quarter of single older women now live in poor conditions and economic penury, making them amongst the poorest and most vulnerable in society.

Hundreds of older women have written to Age Concern to tell us that a lifetime of lower pay, broken work records and caring responsibilities has left them living in poverty in retirement - in some cases with pensions in their own name of just 1p a week.

Age Concern has joined forces with the Fawcett Society to campaign for an end to this injustice. We are calling on the Government to improve the level of the basic state pension, include more lower paid people in the national insurance system and introduce a better system of credits for carers.

This campaign is gaining support across the country and in Parliament. We now need to put pressure on the Government to make it create a fairer system for today's and tomorrow's pensioners. One way you can help is by writing to your local MP and asking them to sign up to Age Concern's early day motion 1752 - 'Pensions For Women'. If enough MPs support the campaign, the Government will have to listen.

To find out more about the campaign, call Age Concern's information line on
0800 009966.
