- SOUTHPORT AND BURSCOUGH HOST RECIPIENTS OF FIRST NATIONAL LOTTERY 'BLUE PLAQUES'
-
SOUTHPORT Photographic Society and the Friends of Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre in Burscough are two of the first lottery-funded projects in the country to be awarded a new National Lottery 'blue plaque' in recognition of their important contribution to their local communities.
Friends of Martin Mere was awarded a grant of £5,000 in 2002 by Awards for All to resurface the path of the Centre's 'hide' - a place from which Whooper and Bewick's swans can be viewed in their natural habitat by large numbers of people, without the birds being disturbed.
Wayne Shields from Friends of Martin Mere explains:- "The path inside the hide was extremely rough and meant that young children and those visitors with disabilities were unable to enjoy its fantastic views. The Awards for All grant allowed us to provide a new path and we are thrilled with the result - and so are the visitors!"
Since the lottery's launch in 1994, 125 projects have been helped by the Good Causes in Southport and Burscough, receiving in total a staggering £8,888,032. UK wide, National Lottery players have raised £14 billion for Good Causes - benefiting over 150,000 projects, large and small, across the UK.
