Tripping the light fantastic!

THE 'Light Up Liverpool' festive competition wants to find people who shine when it comes to Christmas lights and whose homes put Santa's grotto to shame!

Categories for adults and children have been created to find the best outdoor Christmas decorations or lights in the city. So, Liverpool's own Laurence Llewelyn-Bowens have the chance to show off their festive flair on the home front.

The lucky winner in the adult section won't have to pay their electricity bill for a whole year - they will get a powerful 1st prize! The 2nd and 3rd prizes are B&Q vouchers worth £200 and £100, provided by Glendale Grounds Management.

A top-of-the range bike worth £300 is on offer to the under-16 year old who has the best/drawing/painting/collage/photograph of a festive window.

An award ceremony will be held at the Town Hall with Lord Mayor Councillor Ron Gould and Executive Member for Housing and Neighbourhood services, Councillor Flo Clucas, presenting the prizes.

Councillor Clucas said:- "We want the people of Liverpool to really get into the Christmas spirit. Every year so many people make a wonderful effort with their houses - we thought it was about time they got rewarded for lighting up their communities!

I'm sure that there will be many fantastic entries which will be great for Capital of Culture. We'll all be dreaming of a light Christmas!"

To enter or nominate someone, just state in less than 50 words, why you, or the person you're nominating should win.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, December 12. Entries should be sent to Joanne, Marketing, c/o Liverpool City Council, Municipal Buildings, Dale Street, Liverpool, L69 2DH.
All entrants must live within the city of Liverpool boundary. First prize in the adult section will be a cheque for up to £500 made payable to the winner to cover their electricity bill.

Winners will be announced before Christmas.

RAC URGES DRIVERS TO USE THEIR FOG LIGHTS APPROPRIATELY

FOLLOWING the recent bad weather and with more of the same forecast. Motoring organisation RAC is urging drivers to use their lights appropriately.

Although using your lights will make you more visible, there are times when the inappropriate use can be illegal and cause visibility problems for others.

Many drivers switch on their rear fog lights as soon as it gets misty or starts to rain, not realizing the danger this misuse of their lights may cause to themselves and other road users.

The law* states that front and rear fog lights must not be used unless visibility is seriously reduced - which generally means when you cannot see further than 100 metres (328 feet) - and that they must be switched off once the visibility improves.

Using rear fog lights when visibility is greater than 100 metres can mask the brake lights and dazzle those drivers following, thus increasing the risk of a rear-end collision rather than reducing it.

Front fog lights should only be used where visibility is seriously reduced and should be adjusted so as not to cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other road users. The inappropriate use is dangerous as it can affect the oncoming driver's ability to see cyclists, pedestrians, and also the road.

Before setting off on any journey, whatever the weather, you should ensure your lights are clean and in full working order.

Everton Fans Warned off Bolton Match
Report with thanks to Merseyside Police.

MERSEYSIDE Police is urging Everton fans that they should not attempt to attend the match against Bolton at the Reebok stadium this weekend should they not have a ticket.

Police have confirmed that all the away ticket allocation for the match, which kicks off at 3pm on Saturday have been sold.

Greater Manchester Police has asked that fans don't travel to the match if they don't have one of these tickets, and not to buy tickets from any other source.

A number of Everton fans have been ejected from this fixture in previous years after gaining entry to the home end - and GMP has confirmed that any Everton fan found in the home end will be ejected from the ground at the match.
