SOUTHPORT was forced into fielding a changed side, with injuries and cup tied new signings depleting them. Daryl Allen made his debut for the yellows, graduating from the club’s P.A.S.E. Team, the first player to do so.
Altrincham, currently below Southport in the Unibond League, came into this game unbeaten in their last 8 matches. The Robins made the early running, Steve Aspinall’s corner headed over by Peter Baud. In the 11th minute.
Lee Mulvaney departed the field early on with a hamstring injury, Greame Atkinson replacing him. Southport forced 2 corners in succession but were unable to capitalise, Altrincham’s defence superbly marshalled all afternoon by Maddox & Adams, holding strong.
Altrincham broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, Peter Band rose high to power a header past Steve Dickinson.
One nil down at half time, Southport battled hard with Steve Pickford & Peter Thomson both having shots well saved by Coburn.
A second goal from Altrincham seemed likely when Ian Craney’s right wing cross beat the Southport goal keeper but Jimmy Williams saved the inevitable by clearing off the line.
Tony Evans came on as a late substitute for Barry Jones, Southport but the Sandgrounders despite plenty of effort failed to breach the immaculate Robin’s defence.
This result leaves Southport with only the Unibond league to qualify for, the top 12 positions counting towards the new league to be formed next season.
Altrincham have been drawn at home in the next round to fellow Unibonders Runcorn.
