SOUTHPORT V BURSCOUGH
REPORT AND PICTURES BY SALLY DEVINE

A COLD and windy Haig Avenue on the 1st of January saw the first ever League Game of 2004 at the grounds.

Southport was hoping to make up ground and gain valuable points to help them stay in the top 10 of the Unibond League.

The game started well for Southport with Steve Daly of Southport kicking a shot straight at the Burscough keeper. This was followed by Lee Mulvaneys attempt that was disallowed due to Daly interfering with play.

Burscough opened the scoring with Martin Crowder’s Free Kick that was met by Rayan Bowen, who headed the ball past Steve Dickinson and into the Southport net. The Sandgrounders upped their pace, but Chris Price’s header went just wide.

Southport’s Pickford opened attack again and playing a one two with Ashcroft and then firing the ball into net equalising the scores.

Southport then placed more pressure on Burscough leading to Pickford adding to his tally with a low shot into the corner of the net.

Martin Crowder almost cored for Burscough but Dickinson saved it, keeping the yellows in the lead at half time.

The Second Half of the game Burscough found the wind was at their backs, but they were prevented from taking advantage by the solid waves of attacks from Southport.

The Linnets failed to trouble Dickinson for much of the second half as the yellows hung on to the lead. Only in the time added on did Southport’s Jimmy Williams have to make a vital block from Burscough’s Martindale when he was bearing down on Southport’s goal.
