Waterloo Cup, The Last?

-
- THERE were nearly 200 protestors, from youngsters to elderly citizens, attending the 157th Waterloo Cup at Altcar, Merseyside. Among the comments from the protestors were:-
"Its despicable", said Tony Moore, organiser of the protest march and Chairman of the Fight Against Animal Cruelty, in Europe. He stated that he will continue to press for its abolition and hopes this will happen soon.
Mathilda, Tony's companion form Germany, said she, "Didn't know about Britain's dirty secret (Hare coursing), before I came here."
She just had to protest against such cruelty.
Mark, a hunt saboteur, had "given up a day's work to demonstrate against this barbaric cruelty."
Ruth, a mature protester said, "This is my first ever protest." She lives a few miles away and hates the event so thought it was time "She did something about it."
Jan, dressed in riding trousers, stated that she has come nearly every year, as an equestrian, to demonstrate that not all riders are pro-blood sports. She added that most of the riders she associates with are also against the event. She had hunted in the past. She accepted that some people genuinely see it as conservation and she respects their beliefs, but could no longer agree with them.
Other protesters, many local, others from the North West region and some from further afield, expressed their hatred of the Waterloo Cup. Many are disgusted with Tony Blair and the Labour Party for apparently reneging on their pre-election promise to abolish such 'so called sports'.
A random straw poll in the Formby area of about 20 people produced similar comments. The majority were against the Waterloo Cup. Only two were for it. Comments like these kept being repeeted:-
"Its barbaric and shouldn't be carrying on in the 21st Century." - "It should be finished by now. The government has let us down."
- "I'm ashamed, every year at this time, to admit I live in this area."
Several commented that although they were against it, people were entitled to their opinions, and one added that education was the best method of changing opinions. Two people said that they didn't know if they should be abolished;
"these events have gone on for a long time and people were entitled to do if they
wished", although one added that she personally wouldn't like to be involved.
