launches Typetalk service to boost helpline for 18% of
Southport residents
ENERGY consumers using a
textphone now have their own dedicated helpline linked energywatch,
the gas and electricity consumer watchdog.
energywatch North West Director, David Sidebottom, said:- “As
a campaigning consumer organisation it is important that the help,
advice and information we provide on energy matters is an inclusive
service. We are delighted that this innovation will benefit many
more consumers who want to contact us.”
Lorna Hammerstein, Head of Customer Services at Typetalk, said:-
“It’s really good to see organisations like energywatch become
Typetalk aware. It enables its services to be accessed by the 18 per
cent of the population who have difficulties using the conventional
telephone system.”
If you have hearing impairment or a speech impediment and need to
use the textphone for making queries on issues like billing,
switching supplier or misselling, or any other energy-related
problem, you can ring energywatch on the special RNID Typetalk
number-
18001 08459 060708.
A dedicated RNID Typetalk operator joins the line to relay the
conversation between the consumer and the energywatch consumer
adviser to answer problem or query.
The Typetalk system which energywatch has decided to use identifies
the consumer by STD code and then directs the call to the first
available consumer adviser in the nearest regional office.
RNID Typetalk is the only national relay service for people with
communication difficulties.
The service allows deaf, deafened, deafblind, hard of hearing and
speech impaired people to communicate with the hearing world using
the standard telephone system.
RNID Typetalk handle almost two million calls a year from around
15,000 textphone users.
For a gas emergency only the no. is:- 18001 0800 111999. EMAIL
