QE2 Launches Mathew Street Festival
THE most famous ship in the world will make music to launch Europe's largest free city centre music festival.
The Mathew Street Festival is to be officially launched at 11am on August Bank Holiday Monday (August 30) to the sound of the QE2's hooter as it sails up the Mersey.
The arrival of the luxury liner is expect to swell the crowds and organisers are predicting a record turn out of more than 250,000 people at the city's biggest party,
just as Liverpool city centre transforms into a music site as big as Glastonbury!
And revellers on board the cruise ship will be able to join in the party as they will be in earshot of the festival's newest stage at the Pier Head.
The 2004 Festival is set to be the biggest yet, with 150 bands from 20 countries, from as far as Brazil and Japan, performing live on four outdoor stages and at more than 40 indoor venues.
This year's Mathew Street Festival will also celebrate the sounds of Memphis, which twinned with Liverpool in 2004 to celebrate the 50th anniversary Elvis Presley's first record,
"That's All Right".
As part of the twinning of the capital of pop with the birthplace of rock and roll, Memphis held its own 'Battle of the Bands' competition for the Mathew Street Festival. The winning band Beat Generation will perform along with legendary Memphis Band Sam the Sham.
The Pier Head stage opens on Saturday and by Monday will have showcased 25 bands and more than 30 hours of live music. The other outdoor stages will be at Castle Street, Water Street and The Strand.
Now in its 12th year, the festival showcases bands from around the world performing every style of music from Jazz to Bluegrass and the 1950's to the modern day.
Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Mike Storey, said:- "The Mathew Street Festival is known the world over for the diversity of its music and for the amazing crowds. It is unique in that it transforms a city centre into one big music stage for all generations to enjoy. It's so big now with so many acts and people it puts every other summer music festival in the shade.
Having the QE2 on the Mersey as the backdrop to the festival will be a fantastic sight. I'm delighted this top class event has expanded to capitalise on the benefits of our world heritage waterfront. As a music venue it has no equal.
People are still talking about the success of the Summer Pops and with Creamfields just around the corner, it shows why we are the World Capital of pop."

Region Gains
Innovation Boost
THE north west of
England will benefit from a £393,090 cash windfall as part of a package of grants to encourage innovation and good practice in housing, announced today by the Housing Corporation.
A total of 10 projects, nine of which are designed to encourage residents to have a greater say in how their neighbourhoods are run and managed, will receive between £4,000 and £138,000 each.
The largest single grant of £138,000 goes to the Sefton Pathfinder area in order to establish a neighbourhood regeneration company.
Elsewhere, there is £15,000 for the establishment of a model for developing Brownfield land; a further £15,000 for a democratic North West tenants’ and residents’ assembly; and £40,000 for the creation and management of a programme of arts projects designed to add an extra dimension to RSL engagement in Merseyside.
Housing Corporation chief executive, Jon Rouse, said:- “Our Investment and Good Practice programme, and particularly the Community Training and Enabling element, delivers much-needed funds to meet local priorities. This is real cash, going direct to real people who are engaged in initiatives which benefit entire communities.
Over the years, our IGP programme has funded a raft of pioneering projects, many of which have subsequently paved the way as examples of best practice within the sector. I am delighted that the package we are announcing today will ensure that this good work continues.”
The Corporation is also implementing a number of wide-ranging changes to the IGP programme to better reflect central and regional Government priorities.
The IGP programme was launched in 1995 and has funded over 2000 projects to date, to the tune of £75m
