Southport FC V Vauxhall FC
Report and pictures by Sally Devine

THIS was Southport's first home game of the season in the newly created Nationwide North league and it was to be an interesting match.

Vauxhall began the stronger of the two sides, their physical presence making itself felt across the midfield. Dickinson in the Southport goal tipped a curling shot over from Cumiskey as the home side came under constant pressure from Vauxhalls waves of attacks. The Yellows were thwarted by the offsides that the Motormen played and offered very little in the way of clear cut chances in the first half.

The opening goal was scored after 16 minutes, a freekick fell to Peter Cumiskey and he set up the unmarked James Olsen who scored with a strong header.

Worse was to come for Southport in the second half, in the 61st minute Farrell Kilbane handled a goal bound shot and was shown a red card. Dickinson saved brilliantly from the resulting penalty and Nesbitt skied the rebound over the bar.

This served to galvanize Southport, Leadbetter was sacrificed for a defender Earl Davies and on 53 minutes Terry Fearns equalized with a crisp volley after a headed touch on by Neil Robinson.

Vauxhall seemed to visibly wilt and with the lively Mulvaney on to bolster the attack Southport pressed forward looking for the winner.

Chris Price the Port captain ensured the 3 points went to the home side by hitting a low shot from the right which squeezed into the net past the helpless Dittmar.

Vauxhall were left to wonder how they were left empty handed, but will surely pick themselves up and prove a force in this league.
