Lotto Win Dreams Come True for Kirkby Cabbie

TAXI driver Paul Shiers, 40, from Kirkby has received the biggest fare of his life as he clocked up a £73,798 Lotto win by matching five numbers plus the bonus ball in the draw held on Wednesday 25 August.

An amazed Paul revealed that his son Daniel had dreamt that he would scoop the win just two weeks before.

Paul explained:- "It all started about two weeks ago when Daniel, my youngest, told me about his dream. He said 'I dreamt you had just won the lottery and were running around the house celebrating.' I didn't think anything of it at the time; however we didn't have to wait long until it came true!"

Paul who works for the private hire taxi company, Newtown Taxis in Liverpool was having a rare evening off work when he found about the win. He said:- "It is not often that I get the chance to watch the draw on the TV as I am usually working. However on the evening of the win, I was able to have a quiet night at home - well, I thought it would be quiet! I was in the lounge watching the programme when the balls were being drawn; the first number came out then my numbers kept on coming up until I had all five. When the bonus ball came up as the last number, I couldn't believe it!

Wanting to confirm that it was true, I rang my mother and my brother who both checked the numbers for me. For the rest of that night I kept the winning ticket locked on the cabinet next to my bed, although I could barely sleep a wink through the excitement of winning."

Paul and his three sons are thinking of spending some of the money on a family holiday to Spain. Paul explained what the money will mean to the family:- "This win will mean that we will all have better financial security as well as being able to plan a fantastic holiday. it really is a dream come true!"

LOCAL CHEF TO COOK FOR TOP CHEF'S TITLE

A LOCAL chef has just learned that he has won through to the regional finals of the hospitality industry's favourite competition and the chance to hold the title Young Chef 2004.

Philip Sinclair, 22, works at Simply Heathcote's Liverpool, has beaten off tough competition from over 200 other young hopefuls to win through to the Regional Finals of Young Chef Young Waiter of the year.

The competition, now in its 20th year, is organised by The Restaurant Association in partnership with American Express and the Savoy Educational Trust, the hospitality industry's leading independent charitable trust.

Its aim is to encourage young people by giving them a platform to demonstrate their cooking and waiting skills and open to all professional chefs and waiters 25.

Philip will compete in the Northern Regional Final, which takes place at St Helen's College, Merseyside on Thursday 9 September.

Philip, who lives in Southport, studied catering at Southport College, after attending Ainsdale High School and King George V College. The title Young Chef is highly sought-after and brings a tremendous fillip to career ambitions in the hospitality industry - one of the UK's biggest employment sectors.

Philip is one of 32 young chefs who will be tested on various skills, in front of a panel of expert judges selected from the some of industry's most respected chefs and restaurateurs.

The tasks undertaken are no mean feat! Regional finalists have to create a dish from a surprise basket of ingredients, demonstrate a number of culinary skills, and complete a written paper. They will also be involved in an informative wine recognition activity given by Wines from Spain with the 32 waiters jointly in the competition.

All 16 National Finalists will receive a unique prize: an invitation to visit Champagne Louis Roederer on a specially arranged trip just before the National Final.

Just four chefs and four waiters from the Northern Regional Final will go forward to the National Final in London on Monday 4 October. National finalist chefs will cook lunch (served by their team mate) for an invited audience of guests, representatives from the media and other high profile judges.

The awards will be presented later the same day, at a dinner in the House of Commons, hosted by the Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport and Tourism.
