The 2004 24 Hour Yacht Race.

Photographs taken by Patrick Trollope.

THIS years 24-hour yacht race, now in it's thirty eighth year, it had over 80 competitors. This was up on the last few years and the racing and conditions were amazing for the teams and spectators. High winds made the going hard and far more taxing for the teams than that which faced teams in the last two years. Many teams found them selves capsizing this year as the fort bravely to tack into the wind. But as one sailor said+- "It just makes life more interesting." Sadly one team suffered an accident in the early hours of Sunday morning, resulting in a team member being taken to Southport A&E but of the fellow team members said+- "It is just part of sailing." The race-raided funs like last year for the charity "Sail4Cancer", and the charity also competed in the race. On Friday night as preparations were under way, teams were treated to a disco, but Saturday night gave the teams a much bigger treat as two large chart rated pop bands descended on the race to entertain the team on shore and also the spectators. One of the bands even had former 1990's band SPACE lead guitarists Jamie; whose new band Fire Head could be heard all around the lakeside and into Southport it's self. Winning team this year was Bolton Sailing Club (A) {photo below}.  Bolton were in boat no. 2 with sail No. GP 13849. The team completed 108 laps with -0 penalties.
