Wheelchair donated to Eye Unit in memory of former patient
FAMILY, friends and neighbours of Barbara Lloyd, a former patient of the Eye/ENT Unit at Southport General infirmary, have donated a wheelchair to the unit through the Eyelash Charity.
The wheelchair is for the use of other patients while in the unit. Mrs Lloyd was born on 17 February 1923 and died on 26 January 2004.
Mr Niall O'Donnell, Chairman of Eyelash, presented the wheelchair to Sister Angela Williams of the Eye/ENT Unit.
Eyelash is a registered charity formed in 1984. It bought its first laser in 1988, with a second purchased soon after, resulting in a donation to the outpatient department and Ormskirk hospital.
Since then it has raised money for various types of equipment for both hospitals, including microscopes, electronic blood pressure machines and electronic hoists for lifting patients.
Recently, the Eyelash day-care room opened in Southport Infirmary where eye patients are cared for in safe, pleasant, comfortable surroundings.
The aims of the charity are not just the purchase of medical equipment but also include the provision of patient care and comfort, the support of ophthalmic treatment and research and the promotion of public awareness of eye diseases and their prevention.

Liverpool 'Gives up a Buttie' to help world's poor A GIANT buttie and local schoolchildren from De La Salle and Bellerive schools encouraged thousands of Liverpudlians, to give up their lunch and give the cash to help improve people's lives in over 60 countries worldwide.
Liverpudlian actor Joe McGann and scriptwriter Jimmy McGovern gave their support to the launch of CAFOD's 'Give up a buttie For Fast Day' appeal held of
Friday 1 October.
Joe McGann recorded a 40 second advert for the appeal, which was aired on the local radio. He said:- "Please give up a meal; just one; and donate the money you save to CAFOD's Fast Day. That money could help CAFOD provide seeds, tools, fishing nets, chickens - things that will help a family, not just today, but every day."
Jimmy McGovern said:- "I wish I was steadfast enough to say I'll give up beer. But I fear I'm not. But I do promise to go without lunch that day."
In addition local MPs participate in the appeal. Louise Ellman, MP for Liverpool Riverside give up a sandwich and Peter Kilfoyle, MP for Liverpool Walton even gave up sweets and his pudding!
Tim Allen, regional organiser for CAFOD Liverpool said:- "In Britain, we spend almost £3.5 billion a year on sandwiches. In the North region alone, nearly 5 million sandwiches are sold on a weekly basis. However, a donation of just £1.20 is enough to buy one egg-laying hen in Colombia, which can drastically improve one family's life.
The aim of our Harvest Fast Day Appeal in Liverpool is to highlight how far a simple gesture like giving up one day's lunch can go in improving people's lives in developing countries. For instance, many people in Bangladesh live in terrible poverty with limited or no access to healthcare and education. On top of this, the recent floods in another part of the country have caused unimaginable suffering. Harvest Fast Day provides a good opportunity to recognise people's daily struggle to survive."
