BG SPIRIT CREW MEMBER EMBARKS ON CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
IN under 48
hours, local sailor Tony Summers from Liverpool and the crew on
board BG SPIRIT will cross the start line in what is dubbed the
'world's toughest yacht race' - the Global Challenge 2004 /
2005.
Sunday will see the HRH the Princess Royal fire the start gun at
Southsea Castle, Portsmouth, amidst an electric atmosphere provided
by thousands of spectators both on and off the water.
BG Group, a global natural gas company - is sponsoring BG SPIRIT;
one of the 11 identical 72ft yachts embarking on this unique round
the world yacht race.
Under the watchful eye of professional Skipper Andy Forbes, Tony and
the crew will live and work together over the next ten months as
they sail over 30,000 miles the wrong way around the globe. After
months of preparation, the next two days are reaching a climax, as
the crew focus on the testing times ahead in the challenge of a
lifetime.
Commenting on BG Group's involvement, Charles Bland, Executive Vice
President, Policy and Corporate Affairs said:- "This race
perfectly reflects our ethos at BG Group, with shared values of
spirit, determination and team work at the heart of the race. Being
part of the Global Challenge has enabled us to communicate these
values to our employees, both in the UK and all over the
world."
He continued:- "The commitment and sheer dedication the
crew has shown will continue to develop over the course of the race.
What they will learn and experience together is unique and I am sure
that every single person touched by this challenge, whether a BG
SPIRIT crew member or BG Group employee, will come away having
learnt something extraordinary about human nature, and the spirit
that drives us to achieve our goals."
Crucial last minute preparations and safety checks are now being
made with the necessary provisions are stored on board and the yacht
is ready to depart on the first leg of the race to Buenos Aires,
Argentina.

DJs spin the decks for cancer charity ON
Tuesday 5 October Liverpool cocktail bar Bluu will be opening
its doors to raise much needed money for cancer charity Macmillan
Cancer Relief.
Local man James Harris has secured DJ Brendan Long of Bugged Out,
Cream, Voodou and Creamfields fame to headline the evening which
could raise more than £1500 for people living with cancer.
Both Milk and Leopold Frank & the Kramits have pledged their
support for this mid-week event which is set to be a huge success.
International DJ Steve Lawler who is famous for his nights at Ping
Pong Voodou and Circus will also be performing on 5 October.
James explains:- "Bluu can hold up to 500 people so we
will get a great atmosphere in there. Cocktails will only be £3 and
bottles will be £1.50. Tickets will be priced £3 on the door but
tickets are also available from the courtyard at the University of
Liverpool Guild. 100% of ticket sales will be donated to Macmillan
Cancer Relief."
I chose to
support Macmillan Cancer Relief because so many people are affected
by cancer, and whilst other charities do what they can by
researching cures and treatments, those who are affected by the
disease are often overlooked. Macmillan helps whole families cope
with cancer and its traumatic effects."
The event is being held at Bluu which is next to the Tea Factory on
Fleet Street, Liverpool.
