Ryanair Job Boost for City
IRISH based airline Ryanair today announced that they have chosen to open up their latest European base at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The airline told a packed press conference that from March 2005 they will start to base up to four 189 seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Liverpool to operate fights to 13 destinations.
Ryanair first started flying from Liverpool over 16 years ago and currently operate popular services to Dublin and Gerona. In September they revealed that they would commence departures to Rome and Milan early next year and today's announcement will see the low cost carrier also commencing flights to Venice, Pisa, Limoges, Nimes, Granada, Murcia, Reus, Cork and Shannon, bringing their total operation from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to 13 destinations.
This news comes hot on the heals of Europe's third largest low cost airline announcement, also to make Liverpool their northern base, along with Hungarian low cost airline Wizz Air starting flights to Budapest, Warsaw and Katovice next month.
Ryanair's announcement will bring a number of economic benefits for the region's tourism industry with improved access for European visitors as well as important links for the business community. The establishment of a similar operation at Prestwick Airport in Scotland by Ryanair, created around 1,000 jobs and an approximate £15 million additional economic output. Similar boosts to the North West economy are anticipated.
Robert Hough, Chairman Liverpool John Lennon Airport said:- "Ryanair's decision to base four aircraft here will bring significant benefits for the North West including substantial job creation both here at the Airport and within the region along with millions of pounds going into the region's economy."
Neil Pakey, Managing Director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport added,
"Ryanair's commitment is a clear 'coming of age' for Liverpool John Lennon Airport bringing around a further 1 million passengers through the Airport next year. Liverpool is clearly seen by the airline industry as a gateway airport for the North of England and in particular for the low cost airline market."
