The Match SUPER SOUTHPORT MAKE POPPIES WILT
Report and pictures by Sally Devine

THIS top of the table clash between first and second place in the league turned out to be a total rout by the visitors. The much-anticipated game was comfortably won by Southport who turned on a five star showing.

The first goal came as early as the third minute, Steve Pickford Southport's captain headed in from close range past Croudson. Kettering produced an attack which led to Matty Nolan firing wide with the goal at his mercy.

Southport's second came on fourteen minutes, the recalled Steve Daly turning in a low cross from Kevin Leadbetter. The Poppies wilted when reduced to ten men after Craig McIlwain upended Daly when he was clean through on goal, the Kettering man adjudged to have taken out the last man.

Port went in 2 - 0 ahead at half time and within two minutes of the start had increased their lead. Pickford claimed his second of the afternoon with a perfectly struck shot from twenty-five yards out. Kettering was chasing shadows as the away side dominated the game. Kevin Lynch hit a crisp rising shot into the top corner of the net to make it 4 - 0 for the Sandgrounders on 65 minutes. As the shell shocked Poppies were still recovering Southport made it 5 - 0 to the delight of the strong travelling support. Kevin Leadbetter met Lynchs measured through pass and swept the ball past the hapless Croudson who in truth had little chance with any of the goals having been hopelessly exposed by his fragile defence.

This result left Southport 2 points behind Kettering with crucially 4 games in hand to play the next game at Haig Avenue is this Saturday, Gainsboro
