SOUTHPORT TOP OF THE LEAGUE AND GAMES IN HAND
Report and photos by Sally Devine
SOUTHPORT were hoping to complete another double this season having already beaten Droylsden at the Butchers Arms ground. This game was played in poor conditions, earlier rain made for a muddy pitch and the strong gale force winds and heavy showers made good football difficult at times. Droylsdens new signing Striker Robbie Talbot started on the bench.
Southport had the wind behind them in the first half but failed to take advantage, Leadbetter having the better chances but blazed high over the bar with the first. Then, having tricked his way past two defenders his shot was hit tamely wide of Phillips. Droylsden had few chances themselves the Southport defence standing firm, Davis and Kilbane combining well.
Early in the second half Droylsden lost their central defender Robinson suffering a bad leg injury resulting in him being stretchered off. On 57 minutes Southport opened the scoring when Leadbetter received a ball from captain Sid Pickford on the left wing, cut inside Burke and unleashed a shot over the goalkeeper from 20 yards out.
Neil Robinson was introduced into the fray for Daly and scored Southport's second goal, receiving a pass just outside the box from midfielder Kevin Lynch, he swivelled to fire left footed past Phillips. The player was then booked for his over exuberant celebrations at the Home end. The third goal came from top scorer Terry Fearns as full time approached; a pass from Leadbetter received by him in the area was finished with a flourish from close range.
The Sandgrounders are at home next Saturday 27 February v Lancaster City KO 3pm.
