The word on the streets this week!

I hit the streets again to question people about Mobile phones. What do Mobile phones have in common with Southport pier?

The BT Company together with Southport pier trust were organising a project to bring back one of Southport tourist features. The payment from BT was going to sponsor the refurbishment of the pier. In return, at the end of Southport pier would be a state of the art educational and exhibition visitor center with new tram, and a phone mast. The design of the mast was part of a competition, it would stand at the end of the pier, as a piece of public art resembling a triangle. Its design covers a height of 17.5 meters and work to increase BT Cellnet signal. Southport pier trust has £100,000 already and with another £100,000 from BT Cellnet adding up to a total of £200,000.

Southport Sefton Council is refusing to let this plan go ahead. 5 years ago, the Council agreed with the pier trust to raise £200,000 for the restoration of the pier. But now they’re refusing, for the reason that the mast will send out too much radiation. This refusal sets the pier trust  back years because they have only half the money. Pier trust chairman: David Knowles said: “the pier trust would now have to consider what future it had, if any.”

The reason for not allowing the plan to go ahead seem ridiculous as you are more likely to get more radiation from your phone handset. This could be one of the reasons why the Council allegedly denied planning permission on an Orange mast, which was still erected on St Luke’s Rd Bridge, Southport, and why there has been a storm off protest over a mast proposal by a school in Formby. Even this week a phone mast dispute is breaking out again in Sefton with a school at the center of it all! This coupled with other protests of similar nature, has given the Council pause for thought. Why have they decided to make a stand in this case, but if so, is this the right time or place to make the stand. At present there is no official press statement issued from the Council, to us, about this subject even though we have pressed for information concerning this on multiple occasions.
