SOUTHPORT¹S very best clubs and pubs were recognised last Friday night at a special Otravelling awards ceremony.
The six winners of The Southport Reporter & Champion 2005 Night
Life Vote 2005 to find the best venues in the resort received certificates from Champion editor Martin Hovden.
The poll attracted more than 2,000 votes from town centre revellers. Mr Hovden and photographer Patrick Trollope spent the evening visiting each winning club.
The poll was part of The Champion¹s Night Life campaign, started after the tragic death last November of David Vaughan in West Street.
Mr Hovden explained:- "The aim of our campaign is to make people aware of the dangers in Southport town centre at night. We want everyone to focus on the problem.
The poll for young people to tell us their favourite clubs and bars allows us to focus on the positive side of the night life scene in the resort. As we discovered last Friday night, the vast majority of people were out to enjoy themselves and caused no trouble (apart from Lisa Taylor). And they really do have a wide variety of venues to choose from. When we called at each of the winning venues, we were impressed with the determination of all concerned to offer the very best in great atmosphere, friendly staff and lively entertainment.
We were so pleased with the very positive response to our poll,we have decided to make it an annual event."
Southport Reporter Editor Patrick Trollope added:- "It is now our 3rd year that we have run this
competition and the fist time we have joined up with the Champion. This years results have been
dabble what we got last year and is a staggering result for all the clubs and pubs in the town. It shows us all just how important the pubs and clubs are to our community. Well done to all of the pubs and clubs in town, with out your diverse range of watering holes would not have a resort. Remember Southport
Tourist Board's saying... "Southport, Day Time, Night Time, Every
time.""
