THE points were
shared in a pulsating game last Saturday at Haig Avenue. Southport
hosting Cambridge Utd, relegated from Football League Div 2 last
season. The game had an explosive start, Carl Baker netting after
only nine seconds. Kevin Leadbetters shot on goal was only parried
by Howie in the Cambridge goal and Baker followed it up by scoring
from 15 yards out.
Cambridge were soon level after 5 minutes. Westcarr provided the
cross for Fola Onibuje to head past Dickinson in goal. The first
half produced several chances for both sides as the game moved from
end to end.
Baker in prodigious form, scored his second early in the second half
with a sweet volley past Scott Howie to make it 2-1 for the
Sandgrounders. An opportunity to complete his hat trick was
squandered in the 59th minute when the home side were awarded a
penalty, but Baker placed his shot too near Howie and the ball was
comfortably palmed away.
Cambridge made several substitutions, applied pressure and were
rewarded 7 minutes from time when Atkins provided a pass through to
Craig Westcarr who managed to elude the heavy Southport presence and
fire home from close range to be engulfed by his team mates in wild
celebration.
Southport will learn who their opponents are in the FA Cup 4th
qualifying round in the next few days and will be hoping to avoid
the other teams in the Conference.
