Match Reports for week ending January 15
Under 12 In a very tight first half, Halsall went in at half time with a
narrow 0-1 lead at Hesketh Colts thanks to a low driven shot from
Adam Wallace from just inside the Hesketh Colts penalty area.
Hesketh had threatened throughout the first half, however the
Halsall defence marshalled superbly by Adam Pheysey managed to
contain all of the pressure. The second half started with Halsall
putting Hesketh on the back foot. An inswinging corner from the left
delivered by Mike Edwards caught the Hesketh defence out and
resulted in Halsall’s second. Further pressure followed from Halsall
with some good work on the right with both James Hennessey and
Andrew Tindall involved. Another Halsall corner soon followed and
this time Jordan Middleton managed to squeeze the ball in past the
keeper. A Sam Wheeler goal followed very quickly to make it 0-4.
Luke came off the bench for Halsall and put in a fantastic battling
performance to earn himself a well deserved goal and also the
supporters man of the match. A late and well earned consolation goal
followed near the end for a battling Hesketh Colts team.
Formby started brightly at Trinity, playing with the wind in the
first half, with Jonathan Schooler and Jamie Pennington competing
well in midfield. With Southport Trinity pushed back into their
half, Formby had some early chances with Shannon Hunter coming close
on a couple of occasions. Formby attacked well forcing several
corners. The first goal for Formby came from a corner floated in by
Joe Mahoney that was latched onto at the back post by Shannon Hunter
who forced the ball home. After that Formby continued to press and
it was another corner that curled directly into the goal from Joe
Mahoney for Formby’s second. Towards the end of a very long first
half, Southport Trinity came back into the game trying to play balls
behind the Formby defence and were unlucky with a couple for
chances. Trinity came out in the second half determined to use the
wind and press Formby back. They did this to some effect for the
first 10 minutes but Formby held firm with some good defending from
Mathew Rostron and Ryan Jones. However, Formby were quite strong on
the counter attack down the right wing. Formby’s third goal came
from a driving run down the right by Luke Hamilton who then shot
strongly into the bottom corner from inside the box. Formby kept
stifling Trinity in midfield and pushing the ball down the right.
Sam Birtles had the ball in the net for Formby from a good cross
from the right but was ruled offside. However a few minutes later
Sam Birtles made up for this collecting the ball on the left just in
Trinities half, and beating one man on the outside he then cut
across another defender into the box and finished neatly in the
bottom corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. With four goals
Formby eased up slightly and Trinity capitalised with some good play
down their right the ball broke behind the defence and the Trinity
striker put the ball away for their consolation goal. This did spur
Formby into some more action and almost immediately from the kick
off Luke Hamilton was brought down on the right in the box and a
penalty awarded. However, Sam Birtles failed to convert this and the
match ended 4-1 to Formby. |
Under 10
The cold conditions played a part in the performance of both teams
as Ainsdale B took on Burscough FCJ B at the Ainsdale Club. The game
was a scrappy affair which never looked like emulating the style of
football seen in the corresponding fixture at Scarisbrick in
September. Most of the first-half was pressure from Ainsdale, with
Ryan Spencer and Danny Hinchy posing the initial threat up front.
Danny Rimmer and Danny Horne were working well in midfield to
provide early chances. Burscough defended in numbers to great effect
for long periods, stifling Ainsdale attacks with great effect.
Ainsdale kept probing to no avail, with Burscough coming back into
it with a couple of attacking moves; the half ended in stalemate.
The second half started
at a higher tempo than the first, with Burscough showing clear signs
that they weren't prepared to just defend. On a number of occasions
they sprung from their defensive formation with counter-attacks that
were very effectively dealt with by Paddy Whitehead in the Ainsdale
defence. Ainsdale seemed spurred-on by this and began to
attack with more purpose. Joseph Clarke was causing the Burscough
left-back continual problems and Danny Horne and Danny Rimmer
combined well on the left. The deadlock was broken midway through
the second half with a well taken goal by Joseph Clarke.
Substitutions from both sides followed for the last ten minutes with
Mark Jones and Danny Hinchy coming on as a new forward line for
Ainsdale and Tom Fisher coming on for Burscough. The junior Linnets
weren't out of it by any means and more counter-attacking was again
dealt with by the solid Paddy Whitehead. It was from one of his
timely interceptions that Ainsdale scored their second goal. Danny
Moore receiving the ball in his own half before taking on and
beating three Burscough players before smashing the ball past the
Burscough keeper into the bottom left-hand corner.
Ainsdale's Man of the
Match went to the impressive Paddy Whitehead. The match was a
battling display from everyone, but Paddy stood out for his
excellent defending particularly when dealing with the Burscough
counter-attacks. For Burscough, the goalkeeper impressed with a
string of excellent fingertip saves as well as some crucial punched
clearances. Results Week Ending January 15
