Southport, having come back at Edgehill College last week from a 2-0
deficit to a 3-2 lead, cruelly cancelled in the 4th minute of injury
time for a 3-3 draw against Town Green, today’s return fixture was
always going to be interesting.
Town started strongly
but were countered by a bright SFCJ team that, generally, had the
better of the opening 20 minutes, until a series of inconsequential
mistakes turned into local disasters and the ‘Port team found
themselves 2-0 down. A late first half penalty was coolly converted
by Captain John Cross but the official insisted on a re-take which
was well saved by the keeper. 3 minutes before the interval a
further break by ‘Port saw Billy Sutton collect well and drive into
the Town area before placing a low driven cross in front of the goal
for John Cross to tap home. After the interval, with Town chasing to
prevent further damage, the home team won a corner from the right
with Graham Davidson curling in a delightful precision corner which
was met, and headed powerfully, by Josh Rylands, with the Town
keeper making a good save which fell to the feet of the incoming Ben
Elliott who neatly lashed the ball into the net. A flurry of
necessary substitutes, were then made by ‘Port, with the
replacements proving once again what a great squad ethic is
possessed as the, by now tiring, Town side, were pressed
relentlessly with Billy Sutton striking a great solo goal to give
the home side the lead. With 8 minutes to go, Steve Minghella, whose
fresh legs were giving considerable trouble to the visitors, was
adjudged, correctly, to have been tripped in the area and Mark Brown
coolly slotted an unstoppable spot kick into the roof of the net to
give the home side a 4-2 advantage.
With virtually the last
kick of the game, the visitors clawed a goal back from a corner kick
melee but the ‘Port side remained resolute to take all 3 points.
A great squad performance which again reinforces the resilience of
the lads, even in the face of adversity.

Town Green's unbeaten run had to come to end eventually and today
was the day. A great run and shot from Tom Peterson that came off
the bar could have changed the course of the game but the pacey
Danny Boden sprung the offside trap to put the home side into the
lead at half time. T.G. bombarded Churchtown's goal in the second
half but they found keeper Alex Thornton in inspired form and the
next goal of the game came from Boden again. A missed penalty from
the usually reliable Peterson further frustrated the away
side, but a grandstand finish was set up when James McGregor fired
home to make it
2-1.Try as they did they could not break down the Jags rearguard
that were superb to a man especially the outstanding Daniel Hodgson
who was Churchtown manager’s M.O.M. For Town Green it was Joe Doolan.

A tense build up to the Eagles derby match between Town Green’s B
and A teams saw a huge crowd witness a fine display of football from
both teams. TGB started well with several long crosses from Adam
Townson splitting the TGA defense. Constant pressure finally paid
off when Andy Freeman was felled in the penalty area. Charlie Stoker
stepped up to drill the ball home from the spot. TGB continued to
apply the pressure and another superb cross

from Townson saw Stoker
rise above everyone in the box to score a spectacular goal. TGA tried to mount an
offensive move but were held back in their own half by superb
passing by TGB. A free kick awarded to TGB on the edge of the area
saw Shay Banner lift the ball over the defense and a quick knock on
by Townson was met by Freeman to net the third before half time.
TGA started the second
half well and had bad luck when a free kick by David Taylor was
tipped onto the bar by an outstanding Owen Griffiths in TGB goal.
Another shot by John Cain was superbly held by Griffiths. Full time
and a resounding win by TGB saw them head the table with Formby JFC.
A special thanks to referee Barry Simm who kept a tense game
flowing.

This was a tightly contested game throughout in a game either team
could have won.SFCJ had three former Trinity players in their team
James Smith, Anthony Brown and SFCJ captain Oliver Cunningham all
with a point to prove.SFCJ pressed forward from the start and a well
worked move by Sam Johnson and Anthony Brown saw a right wing cross
into the box which found Robson Baldwin to produce a fine save from
Mathew Gautry. SFCJ opened the scoring from a corner taken by
Anthony Brown which fell short to Oliver Cunningham to return it to
Brown who sent in a great cross for Sam Johnson to head the ball
into the net, from then on SFCJ took control of the game till half
time.
Trinity came out all
guns firing and where first to every ball, Christy Devlin sent
Trinity sub Dylan Norbury clear down the left who cut in and hit a
curling shot inside the far post. The next ten minutes both teams
battled for possession and a breakaway by SFCJ saw Sam Johnson
return the compliment to Anthony Brow by hitting a cross into the
goal area for Brown to power a header into the net. Brown could not
contain his celebrations scoring against his old team who released
him earlier this season. From then on SFCJ kept it tight with Callum
Lawson clearing a definite goal off the line and producing some
clinical tackles to shut out Trinity who also rattled the bar late
on. A good win for SFCJ who need to improve on this display to
remain in second place in the league.

Town Green 'A' and Redgate 'A' met for the first time this season
and both teams started brightly. Town Green played flowing football
from the start and it was Tom Pearce who opened the scoring when he
won the ball on the left, beat the defence and found the back of the
net. Danny Huyton made surging runs on the right and Joel Day got on
the end of a cross and finished clinically to make it 2-0 to Town
Green. Redgate had their chances but Sam Stubbs was timing his
tackles brilliantly in defence and Stephen Killen held on to every
shot on goal to deny them opportunities to get back in the game.
After half time, Town Green increased the scoreline when Kieran
Dowell had a solo run and wrong footed the Redgate keeper,
accurately directing the ball into the goal. Joel Maxwell and Ryan
Dwyer were
combining well to keep the pressure on Redgate and Sam Mulholland
was required for his defensive skills to keep a battling Redgate at
bay. Dowell struck again for 4-0 before Pearce got his second for a
5-0 win for Town Green.
