Match Reports for Week Ending 19 March

Under 13 Tesco Cup: Town Green 4-2 Eagle Sports

Town Green squeezed through this tough but very entertaining semi-final. An outstanding display from Town Green goalkeeper Ben McLoughlin kept Eagle Sports at bay throughout but Town Green went 1-0 down to an early goal. Before half time Town Green’s centre back Alex Howard levelled. 5 minutes into the 2nd half Eagle Sports again took the lead but Town Green continued to play good football and got their reward with a good finish from Robbie Metcalf. Both teams went on to miss many chances but Town Green were finishing the strongest and created the better chances. Going into the last 10 minutes Town Green edged ahead with 2 more goals from Robbie Metcalf. A great team performance.

Under 11
Formby 3-5 Town Green

The previous 2 meetings between these teams had produced draws and Formby were beginning to look like Town Green's bogey team, especially when they were 2-0 up after 15 minutes courtesy of two very well taken goals from Declan Blackwell. 3 first class saves from Jake Brown in the Formby goal kept the away side at bay but a headed goal from Tom Peterson set the game up for an exciting 2nd half. Having been slightly out of sorts in the 1st half James McGregor suddenly kicked into gear and fired in a fantastic to put the game out of Formby's sight. M.O.M. Jay Francis also found the net. Formby's M.O.M. Blackwell completed his hatrick as well.

Southport Trinity 0-2 Town Green 'B'

This was the 3rd meeting this season between the bitter rivals of Southport and Town Green. The game got off to a positive start for Town Green as Adam Townson and Charlie Stoker both had efforts cleared by Trinty keeper Jacques Verite. Constant pressure from Town Green resulted in a succession of corners, one of which was met by a powerful header from defender Dean Smith which almost tipped the goal over as it hit the back of the net.

Town Green expected Trinity to come out all guns blazing in the second half and they didn't disappoint. Trinity striker Jack Goulding went close but generally was held at bay by a sound performance from TG's Shay Banner. Townson came close with 5 minutes to go when he connected with a Stoker flick only to see his header glance the outside of the post.

With just 2 minutes left, Town Green gained a throw in by the Trinity corner flag. A long throw by captain Will Mckee was flicked on by Stoker who found Townson at the far post who calmly stabbed the ball into the back of the net. Another 3 points gained by Town Green 'B' keeps them clear at the top of the table.

Under 9
Town Green A 2-2 Southport FC Juniors A

This top of the table match between the Division’s top 2 teams lived up to all expectations, both teams created chances in the early stages but it was SFCJ who took the lead. A throw-in by Anthony Brown into the Town Green box was met by James Smith to loft the ball over the defence and into the far side of the net from a difficult angle, from then on SFCJ dominated the rest of the half and Robson Baldwin and Jack Bainbridge in outstanding form. SFCJ forced many corners before half time and from one of them the SFCJ leading goal scorer James Smith rose above everyone to power a header into the net to add to his total, from their next corner Anthony Brown smashed a header against the post with the keeper beaten and would have put the game beyond Town Green.

The 2nd half started as the first and both teams playing some superb football, Town Green pushed forward to get back into the game and a goal mouth scramble saw the ball hammered into the SFCJ net. This inspired Town Green into action again and after a great move down the left the ball was met by a Town Green forward to slide the ball past Callum Jones in the SFCJ goal. The game was there to be won by both teams and after a shaky start to the half Jack Bainbridge and Oliver Cunningham kept it tight at the back for SFCJ. The game ended a draw and after a tremendous first half SFCJ can look back at what might have been and might have nicked a win but credit to Town Green for their come back. Jack Bainbridge was man of the match for SFCJ for a truly outstanding performance and with only 2 games left SFCJ are coming back to their early season form.

Redgate Rovers 'A' 0-2 Burscough FC Juniors

A very competitive game that Redgate were unlucky to come away from without at least a point. Both teams were well organised and made it hard for either side to create chances. Redgate powered by Craig Lowe, their midfield dynamo, created numerous flowing attacks using both Michael Panes and Matthew Croughan, who worked tirelessly, down the flanks, only to see shots charged down. Burscough held firm and were able to build their own attacks to give Redgate a number of scares but their defence with Ciaran McCarthy, giving an excellent performance, held firm.

Redgate's man of the match Freddie Russell then came into his own on the left creating some excellent play as well as defending when required. This all boded well for the second half which saw Redgate getting more of the play with Dan Abdous leading the charge on the Burscough goal. Burscough through their centre midfield and centre half proved hard to crack, both these players giving towering performances.

10 minutes from time Redgate made a couple of substitutions with Burscough capitalising on the changes before the players settled in and scored their first.

Redgate then had to chase the game with Sam Bennett who produced a number of great runs from the back being the instigator of many attacks. One such attack saw the ball cleared from the Burscough goal area only to be fired back by Sam with the Burscough goalkeeper making an excellent save. Ben Heap who took every opportunity to get forward for Redgate was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.  Redgate continued to push forward only to be caught on the break by Burscough who scored their second, this capped a good performance by their number 9.  Despite conceding these goals, none of which he could do anything about, Ryan Walker was again commanding in goal for Redgate.  An excellent game that gave Burscough their first win of the year.
