Mersey schools make finals

GRANGE Comprehensive School from Runcorn and North Manchester High School from Manchester qualify for UK National Final.  Grange School from Runcorn beat North Manchester High School from Manchester in the Final of the Five-A-Side Football PlayStation Schools’ Cup, which took place at the Walton Sports Centre in Merseyside, on 24 March 2006. However, both teams now qualify for the UK Final taking place at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, on 5 April.

36 school teams took part in the tournament based in Liverpool. Grange School won 6 games, drew 1 and lost 2 to qualify through the group stages. The school from Runcorn then beat Wright Robinson School from Manchester 2 -1 in the Quarters Finals, before going on to beat Witten Park High School from Blackburn 3 – 1 in the first semi final of the day.

Runners up North Manchester School won 7 games and drew 2 to qualify through the group stages, before going on to beat Campion Catholic High School from Liverpool 2 – 1 in the Quarter Finals, and St Joseph’s School from Bolton 3 – 1 in the other Semi Final. In an exciting Final, Grange School beat North Manchester School 3 - 0 to win the Liverpool round of the PlayStation Schools Cup, with both teams qualifying for the UK Final.

Over 200 schools throughout the UK will be competing in the regional Under-15 tournaments, taking place in Liverpool, Edinburgh, Coventry, London, Newcastle and Southampton, throughout March. The 2 leading teams from each regional round will automatically qualify for the UK Final.

The event was supported by Liverpool FC midfielder, Xabi Alonso, who said:- “The PlayStation Schools’ Cup is fantastic for the kids. It’s very competitive, and there are some players here with great ability, but all the games are played in the right spirit – the way football should be played. There was nothing like this in my day, it’s fantastic, brilliant, I would have loved it. The opportunity to go on and play against other European school teams is amazing!”

The winner of the UK Final will represent Great Britain in the European PlayStation Schools’ Cup, staged at the awe inspiring sporting facilities within Disney Land Paris, featuring teams from the UK, Germany, France, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Spain. The event will be staged on the same day as the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final (17 May 2006), also taking place in Paris at the Stade de France. Adding a further incentive, all the school teams that qualify for the European tournament will be taken to the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final, as guests of PlayStation.

Rob Higgins, PE Teacher of Grange School said:- “Today’s been absolutely fantastic and the lads have loved every minute of it. The organisation has been superb and the competition provides a great experience for the kids to come and compete against other schools in the area. All the players in our squad have been involved at some point during the day, with each and everyone playing a part. I’m really proud of them and I’ve got my passport ready for the European Finals!”

PE Teacher of North Manchester, said:- “It’s been a fantastic day, well organised, and the lads have really enjoyed themselves. There’ve been some good sides here today, so we’re delighted to have got through to the National Finals. The football has been out of this world. The boys performed really well all day and if we play a similar passing game in the National Finals, we’ve got every chance of making it through to the European Finals”.  Schools can find out more about the project by logging on to website.
