Go in search of the Ribble Estuary’s amazing birdlife

THE Ribble Estuary offers an amazing chance to see a variety of wild birds in their natural environment.

The RSPB will be leading guided walks to look for some of these birds over the next few weeks. The walks will be in the Clifton area, between Preston and Freckleton.

The first of the free walks of the season is on Monday 1 May. The walks will go across areas not normally open to the public, so they provide a one-off opportunity to see normally hidden parts of the estuary.

Some birds, like the black-tailed godwit and knot, are fast flying, colourful and occur in flocks of many hundreds, often thousands. They glean a precarious survival from the food-rich tidal mud banks of the estuary.

Others such as corn buntings and tree sparrows are smaller and often harder to find in their farmland habitat where they nest and feed through the spring and over the winter. The distinctive song of the corn bunting, sounding like a bunch of jangling keys, can still be heard on farmland along the Ribble shore.

While on areas of damp grassland and marsh, the tumbling displays of lapwing are accompanied by their peeee-wit calls. In many areas, these birds have declined, but the Ribble offers a local stronghold. Black-tailed godwits are rare breeding birds in the UK, but a few pairs can be found with the lapwings around the Ribble marshes.

Carol Coupe, RSPB godwit project officer, said:- “The Ribble estuary is well known for its amazing wealth of important wildlife. These walks will provide an excellent opportunity to see birds in an area that is not normally open to the public and we are grateful to the landowners for allowing us access to their land.“

Andrew Gouldstone, RSPB Area Conservation Manager, said:- “These guided walks are an exciting part of the local Godwit Nestwatch Project, and we are extremely grateful to United Utilities and Cory Ibstock for supporting this work. We are all eagerly awaiting the return of the nesting godwits. The Nestwatch Project provides daily protection for the rare nesting black tailed godwits, who’s eggs are targeted by unscrupulous egg thieves. The project relies on support from the local community and anyone interested in helping with the wardening please contact Carol Coupe on 01995 642251”.

The guided walks will last about 2 ½ hours, and will start at 10 am. Walks will also be held on 9 and 17 May, and 1, 9, and 17 June 2006.

As numbers are strictly limited to 20, booking is essential by ringing the RSPB on 01484 861148 or by email to anna.sugrue@rspb.org.uk. Details of where to meet will be provided when bookings are made.

Walkers are advised to take food and drink, and binoculars, waterproofs, warm clothing and stout footwear.
