THE DARKNESS ROCK THE POPS

THE DARKNESS bring their spectacular take on stadium metal to this year's Pops on 13 July 2006. They join a line up already bursting with star names including a double sell out by legends The Who, along with shows from Bryan Adams, Pet Shop Boys, a-ha, James Brown, Westlife, Simple Minds, Simply Red, Whitesnake, Deacon Blue, Ronan Keating, Oscar Peterson, Jools Holland, New Order, Sugababes, Il Divo, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy.

During the Pops illustrious six year history, organisers CMP Entertainment have consistently brought some of the biggest names in pop and rock to the month long event in Liverpool which has become recognised as one of the key dates on the European festival circuit.

Formed in the unlikely surroundings of Lowestoft at the beginning of the millenium, The Darkness have been perhaps the most surprising rock smash of recent years. Their debut single, 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' introduced a whole legion of fans to their brilliant new take on the classic rock of the '70s and '80s, combining the theatricality of Queen with the energy of Van Halen. Their next single 'Growing On Me' became a classic, reaching number 11 on the back of a hilarious video which introduced the flamboyant dress sense of Justin Hawkins, the band's irrepressible frontman.

The Darkness' debut album, 'Permission To Land' was released in July 2003 and saw the band enjoy a huge number one hit as the band became tabloid favorites. Metal bible 'Kerrang' was moved to dub the Darkness "the greatest rock 'n' roll band of the last twenty years", and a re-release of 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' soared to number two in the charts. By 2004 they were celebrating a five-times platinum album and an amazing three Brit Awards for Best Act, Best Rock Act and Best Album.

2006 has seen the band continue where they left off with the top ten success of second album 'One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back' with it's accompanying hit singles 'Is It Just Me?' and 'Girlfriend'. Their live reputation is awesome with a massive stadium show which in the past has included everything from inflatable tigers, hells angels and lots of explosions! This sure to be one hell of a show!

Frontman Justin Hawkins, said:- "To play for the people of Liverpool is privelage enough but to play on the same line up as Whitesnake is truly wonderful. Liverpool will be rocked!"

Council Leader Warren Bradley added:- "The Darkness is a fantastic addition to a line up full of the diversity which makes the Pops such a unique and special attraction."

Chas Cole of promoters CMP said:- "Adding The Darkness to this year's Pops line up completes a set of huge star names with what is surely our best bill ever."
