A
Valuable Lesson in Speaking and Listening
THE IMPORTANCE of developing
young people’s speaking and listening skills will be demonstrated at
school events in the Liverpool region during a roadshow delivered by
the BT Education Programme.
Young people from both Primary and Secondary Schools are going to
receive special free school events consisting of drama and
classroom-based activities. The Primary School events for
pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7 (ages 8 to 11) are based around
friendship and the issue of toxic friends. The events are delivered
in 2 parts; a 30-minute drama performance followed by three
classroom-based workshops led by an actor/facilitator. Each workshop
will consist of one of ten lessons from the BT Education Programmes
’10 Best Classroom Communication Techniques Ever!’ DVD. The
DVD demonstrates different ways teachers can engage with pupils in
their class, including the use of Forum Theatre, Hot Seating and
Teacher in Role.
The Secondary School events are aimed at
Year 10 and 11 pupils (ages 14 to 16 years). The in-school
experience will take the format of a 40 minute stand alone
performance called ‘The Interview’. The performance uses an
interview theme to demonstrate the importance of effective speaking
and listening skills. This will be followed by a one hour
classroom-based workshop. The workshop will be supported by one of
the free BT teaching resources on Speaking and Listening Skills,
entitled ‘Moving On’ which explores applied conversation
skills, preparing young people for life after school.
Both the Primary and Secondary school events are to be delivered by
specialist theatrical communications company CragRats Ltd.
At the close of each event, schools are presented with a DVD and DVD
player, to introduce them to the full range of resources available
from the BT Education Programme.
Primary Schools:-
Nine Tree Primary (SAW) in Stockbridge
Village – Brookside Primary in Stockbridge Village – Thornton
Primary (VN) in Crosby – Forefield Junior School in Crosby -
St William of York in Liverpool – Valewood Primary & Grange
Primary in Bootle and Redgate Primary in Formby.
Dave Hancock, head of BT Education and
Volunteering, said;- “At BT we believe good communication is
an essential life skill and we are pleased to see Speaking and
Listening skills appearing in the curriculum. BT is often perceived
as a ‘technology’ company, but we know that whatever the medium,
communication will always be essentially human in nature. This is
why we are passionate about helping young people, teachers and
parents to improve their skills. The Education Programme focus
on free speaking and listening resources, combined with our
in-school delivery programme using BT Volunteers and the
Communication Skills Roadshow is making a significant input to
helping deliver the curriculum”.
About BT Education Programme Building on the success of seven years
of BT Education Programme in-school events, teams of actors from
CragRats Ltd are touring the country until July 2006 with the
communication skills Roadshow. Over 1400 schools will experience an
Education Programme school event between 2004 & 2006.
