LEARN SOMETHING NEW - START TO SIGN DURING ADULT LEARNERS WEEK

RNID, the charity representing the 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK, is encouraging people in the North West to learn British Sign Language (BSL) during Adult Learners Week (20 May to 26 May).

With 50,000 BSL users in the UK, a little sign language can go a long way when communicating with deaf people – perhaps some of your colleagues or customers at work are deaf? RNID offers a one, two or three day Start To Sign course, where a deaf trainer will come and teach groups of up to twelve people. This is perfect for anyone who wants to learn something a bit different with friends or colleagues.

BSL involves learning different handshapes and movements, facial expression, and shoulder movement. The language is structured in a completely different way to English, and like any language it has its own grammar. To help learners on their way, a Start To Sign pack is available from RNID, which includes a book and a CD. The book contains photographs of more than 1,000 everyday signs and information about BSL and its grammar. The CD contains video clips and an animated fingerspelling programme – you can even test your progress with one of the interactive quizzes.

Cheryl Cullen, Director of RNID’s Employment Training and Skills Service, says:- “The Start To Sign course and resources are perfect for those who want to learn a unique skill this Adult Learners Week. It’s also perfect as a corporate team-building excersise or ice-breaker, as it’s fun and informative. The course will help you begin to understand how to communicate with sign language users, and is a great way to motivate and stimulate people.”

To find out more about RNID’s Start To Sign course or to order the Start To Sign book and CD, please contact RNID’s Information Line on 0808 808 0123, textphone 0808 808 9000 or visit www.rnid.org.uk. The RNID Information team can also give you details of your nearest BSL course.
