TAKE A BREAK – BECOME A COMIC ....OR A COOK... OR A MUSICIAN....OR A
FILM EXTRA.!
PUT your
sun-tan lotion and beach towel away – have a funny holiday instead.
Laughter Clinics and Stand Up courses are to be part of a unique
tourism campaign to promote Liverpool as European Capital of Culture
in 2008.
The city is launching the UK’s 1st package of ‘experiential
cultural holidays’ at next week’s British Travel Trade Fair,
which involves offering tourists a try at various cultural roles
from being a comic and a cook to a musician or even a feature film
assistant. A total of 18 cultural packages will be promoted to
national and international travel operators at the Birmingham event,
as part of the first ever British Tourism Week.
In a major collaboration with several cultural institutions, the
Liverpool Culture Company is promoting the ‘hands on holidays’
with the help of the city’s major events and venues. The offers
include how to become a stand-up-comic in just 2 days, taking part
in a carnival parade in your own costume, to being a technical
assistant in a film – with a chance of being an extra! There’s also
a series of workshops from how to play in a professional band, to
writing a film script to making pottery and cooking.
Visitors are also being offered VIP treatment at a major new fashion
show, as well as taking a behind the scenes tour of the city’s
historic theatres and museums and galleries.
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said:-
‘’Liverpool is a fantastic place to explore, but beyond our
music and heritage we also have an army of amazingly creative people
and events. With their support we can give people a holiday where
they do more than just look, take photos and write postcards. These
packages offer a fantastic chance to tourists with a sense of
adventure to get under the skin of a city’s cultural scene. It will
give people skills and memories that will last much, much longer
than a suntan.’’
As well as the cultural experiential packages, Liverpool will also
be promoting its European Capital of Culture highlights, as well as
new developments such as the 10,600 seater Arena and Convention
Centre (weblink)
which opens in January 2008. It is estimated Liverpool will attract
an extra 1.7million visitors in 2008.
Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of Liverpool Culture Company,
added:- ‘’Liverpool has a phenomenal cultural offer and has
often been at its cutting edge. Now we want to transform what a city
break is and take visitors to places they’ve never been or seen. As
European Capital of Culture next year these packages give tourists a
unique guide to see what makes the city tick creatively and a chance
to discover something new about themselves.’’
Liverpool will be at stand NW334 at the British Travel Trade Fair at
Birmingham NEC from 13 March 2007 to 14 March 2007. (weblink).
