OULTON PARK- THE NEW SEASON AHEAD
THE most
beautiful car racing circuit, just outside Merseyside in Cheshire, England, with fantastic
spectator views, has over the winter months been improved for the
drivers and spectators alike. The team, under the expert guidance of
the chief executive, Jonathan Palmer, who won the British F3
Championship in 1981, are a very happy, friendly and helpful group
of keen experts in their respective fields. The 2007 season will,
without doubt, be their busiest and best yet.
We had a sneak
preview of what was on offer this year at the Oulton Park Season
Launch. At the event was a good range of drivers, riders and cars,
as well as the odd motor bike and a few carts.
British Formula 3 - Greg and Leo Mansell, sons of 1992 F1 World
Champion Nigel Mansell. Nigel Mansell also popped in to see his lads
taking the press around the track.
Some of the drivers took the press for a spin around the track in
the cars that they will be racing this year. Attending the race
preview was Cheshire based Mark Butterworth and his fantastic VSCC
1934 Lagonda Two Twelve. The VSCC race is the race to go to for a
friendly relaxed and fun day out for all the family as we found out
last year. Click here to see last years report on the race.
Also on hand was Steve Brogan, former British Superbike racer from
Liverpool to keep the bikers happy... James Pickford,
Macclesfield-based former SEAT touring car racer in his Porsche.
And the list goes on... A audio report is at the end of the photo
pages so you can hear Greg and Leo Mansell and other drivers telling
us what they do and what we could see later this year.
This is a quick brack down of what you are able to see if you head on
down to the track this year...
On the 7 April 2007 and 9 April 2007 there is the British F3
Championship. It is one of the most prestigious F3 championships in
the world. Many famous drivers have raced in this competition over
past years, amongst whom were Ayrton Senna, Jenson Button, David
Coulthard, and Mika Hakkinen to name but a few. This year, Nigel
Mansell’s two sons, Greg and Leo, will be competing in it driving
for Fortec Motorsport.
On the same day there is one of the world’s biggest domestic
sportscar series races, the Avon Tyres British GT. Some of the most
famous producers of sports cars have entered and will be racing in
this first of the six series of races. Aston Martin, Ascari,
Dodge,Ferrari, Lotus, Lamborghini, and Porsch are all represented in
this year’s series. Who will triumph in this super sports car
battle, will it be the American, English, German or Italian
machines?
The Adult Race Day is from £15, Adult Race Day (gate) £20, Children
(12 & under) Free.
Oulton Park will be putting on the Superkart Championships on the 28
April 2007 and on the 16 June. 2007 This is a most astounding sight
and very exhilarating. The 6 speed gear boxes, in these 250cc
twin-cylinder, long-circuit karts, can reach speeds of at least 150
miles per hour and go from 0 to 60mph in 3.6 seconds! These
staggering beautiful, aerodynamic vehicles look just like an F1
racer and are just 2 inches off the ground. Incidentally, they are 5
seconds a lap faster than a Ferrari 360 on most of the UK circuits!
The 28 April 2007 meet is the opening round and will have 125cc and
250cc machines racing in the National Superkart Championship
(Support to New Era and BARC Club Racing).
The Adult Race Day is from £10, Children (12 & under) Free.
The British Superbike Championship will be at Oulton Park on 5,6,7
May 2007 and 13,14,15 July 2007. The well known manufacturers of
motorcycles are splendidly represented by Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki,
Suzuki, and Yamaha. Who will obtain the title this year? Will be
Leon Haslam, or Kiyonari or Lavilla, or some other rider?
Whoever it will be, it will be a great tussle.
The Adult Race Day is from £21, Children (12 & under) Free.
The 9 June 2007 has Oulton Park hosting the VSCC Hawthorne Memorial
Trophies meeting. This is run by that very well organised group, the
Vintage Sports Car Club. This Race Day encapsulates the true spirit
of racing as it was in the earlier days. There will be F1 and F2
cars jousting for honours in honour of Mike Hawthorne, the very
first F1 World Champion. Also featured during the day will be
Scratch and Handicap races for some of the famous pre and post
Second World War days.
The Adult Race Day is from £15, Children (12 & under) Free.
The 5th round of the British Touring Car Championship is at Oulton
Park on the 23 June 2007 and 24 June 2007. This is the most famous
of the saloon car series in the world and these 2000cc four door
saloons really excite drivers and spectators alike. Will Matt Neal
retain his championship now he has switched from an Honda Integra to
a new Civic Type R car? The works team from Vauxhall, VX Racing,
will be gunning for success with their new Vectra as will SEAT UK
with their latest Leon car driven by Jason Plato.
The Adult Race Day is from £21, Children (12 & under) Free.
On the 26 August 2007 and 27 August 2007, the exciting and
prestigious Gold Cup Meeting is being held at Oulton Park. This is
one the top class events of the year for Historic Racing Cars.
Originally the Gold Cup was for non-championship Formula 1 races
during the 1950’s and ‘60’s. Today it honours the cars of that era.
Some of those wonderful and great drivers of yore, including Jackie
Stewart and Jim Clark, will be racing. This 2 day event at the
“Goodwood of the North” will see over 20 races fielding single seaters, sports cars as well as touring cars with the popular
addition of the Group B rally cars taking part too. Those Group B of
‘Slowly Sideways’ cars are some of the fastest ever built!
The Adult Race Day is from £15, Children (12 & under) Free.
