Celebrate on 20/08
THE Liverpool
Culture Company is asking local organisations and businesses to help
celebrate the
city’s European Capital of Culture status.
Each year on 20 August – 20/08 – groups across the region are
encouraged to celebrate Liverpool’s 08 success by making an
‘offer’ for the day. An offer can take the form of free or
discounted entrance, or a special event or promotion.
Last year 20/08 day included hundreds of offers. People were given
the chance to sample a huge selection of activities – from free
lessons in rock climbing to taking an exclusive behind the scenes
tour of a brewery, free CD loans from local libraries to discounted
dining in city centre restaurants.
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council said:-
“This will be the fifth year that we have celebrated 20/08 and
the event has gone from strength to strength.
Last year’s celebrations had something for everyone, allowing
thousands of people to sample a whole range of activities and I’d
like to make this year’s celebrations even more successful.
There are so many things to see and do in the city - 20/08 is a
chance to celebrate to find out exactly why we won Capital of
Culture in the first place.
I’m appealing to organisations and businesses across the city –
large and small – to think about what they can do to contribute to
20/08 this year.”
August 20 will also mark the 2nd birthday of the 08 Place –
Liverpool’s one stop culture shop. The Whitechapel store opened its
doors for the first time on 20/08 day in 2005.
It’s really easy for groups, businesses, or organisations to get
involved in 20/08, they just need to visit www.liverpool08.com and
complete the special 20/08 form. All offers will appear on the
website and in a 20/08 day brochure, which is distributed to venues
across the city.
The deadline for offers is Friday, 22 July 2007. |

TRANSPLANT HOPE FOR SOUTHPORT PATIENTS
THIS year’s
Southport Jazz Festival has been hailed as a huge success. Despite
all the competition from lots of events throughout Merseyside over
the weekend, the event has attracted an estimated 25 thousand
visitors to the town.
The event which has
been held over 31 May to 3 June 2007, took in not only four days and
four nights but also twenty five venues with sixty five performances
and over one hundred and seventy five artists. We took a quick look
on Sunday at what was on offer, calling in to see the Fatchops at
the Arts Centre, in the afternoon. Then we went to hear a regular to
the event, the Tom Sykes Trio, who played in the Wayfarers Arcade.
Eve, in Lloyds bar put on a stunning performance.
After a break till 8pm, we were off to see the Annie Long Duo at the
Fifty One, followed by a quick stop at the Arts Centre to see the
Zappatistas.
A fantastic helping of jazz at the Royal Clifton Hotel with the
local big band, Liane Carroll and the Swingshift Big Band continued
our tour. To round off the night we popped under Southport’s TIC,
into the bar called Core, to see the Dave Roberts Duo.
Our editor was disappointed that he could not see more of this
year’s event and cannot wait now to next year’s. One of the Sefton
Tourism officers said:- "It has been a fantastic event. It is
hard tosay how many people have come, but it has had a huge impact
on the town yet again. We hope that next year we can get more venues
on board as it will be a fantastic addition to Liverpool08 and that
should help numbers of visitors to climb even higher still."
