Fashion rocks at the Albert Dock
TWENTY five
final year fashion students from Liverpool John Moores University
showed off their new collections at a series of catwalk shows on
Thursday 31 May 2007.
Thanks to the support of the Albert Dock Company, this year’s two
shows will took place in the Albert Dock’s Britannia Pavilion.
The fashion shows are just one of the events scheduled at the Albert
Dock as part of LJMU’s annual Degree Shows by final year art and
design students. The full range of exhibits will include
illustration, graphic design, multi media, fashion and textiles,
architecture and fine art.
The Degree Shows opened to the public on Friday 1 June 2007 and runs
until Sunday 17 June 2007, 10am to 4pm (closed Mondays and
Tuesdays). Entrance is free.
The 25 final-year fashion students have been working for over nine
months to get their collections together and will each have the
opportunity to showcase six designs on the catwalk.
Delphine Wilson, LJMU's Head of Fashion explains:- “We place a
lot of emphasis on training independent creative designers, who have
real design talent and a strong idea of contemporary style. This
really comes across in this year’s shows, which demonstrate just how
much creative talent we have in the university and in the region.
This year’s collection showcases 25 hybrid statements of style.
We’ve got edgy menswear collections, which subvert orthodox
tailoring and reinvent men’s sportswear. Then at the other end of
the spectrum you’ve exquisite tailoring and meticulous beadwork on
beautiful and highly wearable women’s dresses and separates.”
Following the fashion shows, the students head off to London for the
Graduate Fashion Week (Battersea, that started on 3 June and will
end on the 6 June 2007), one of the largest and most exciting
graduate design event in the UK.
In the past, LJMU graduates have used the event as a platform to
sell their designs and secure placements with leading fashion
designers such as Paul Smith, Donna Karen, Ted Baker, Bench, Luella,
Jens Laugesen, Tank Magazine, Louis Vuitton, Warehouse, Monsoon,
Matthew Williamson.
Delphine Wilson continues:- "Based on the strength of this
year’s collections, I’ve no doubt that our graduates will rank among
the next generation of influential designers who will shape future
trends in fashion, textiles, interior design and much more.”
The Albert Dock was chosen as the new home for the Fashion Shows and
the Degree Shows following the success of LJMU’s Site gallery at the
Dock and the ongoing partnership between the University and the
Albert Dock Company.
Martin Downie, Director of the School of Art and Design, said:-
“This year’s degree shows promise to be even better than ever
thanks to the University’s partnership with the Albert Dock Company.
For many of our students this will be the first time that they have
exhibited their work in a major exhibition space but I have no doubt
that they will rise to challenge in terms of their professionalism
and creative ability.
Some great reputations have been launched at these shows in the past
and this year visitors will be treated to some of the best new work
in the region. So, if you want to see the tomorrow’s stars of the
art world today, come down to the Albert Dock.”
Graham Cook, Director of the Albert Dock Company said:- "We
are very proud to be hosting some of Liverpool’s most exciting new
creative work at the Albert Dock. Our aim is to constantly improve
the visitor experience here and we believe that LJMU’s Degree Shows
will bring a vibrancy and ‘buzz’ that will entertain and inspire
visitors.
In line with our focus on tourism and leisure, the visual arts offer
at the Albert Dock is getting stronger and stronger. In addition to
LJMU’s Degree Shows, Site gallery and Tate Liverpool, we are hosting
a number of exhibitions by local artists throughout the year and the
art shops at the Dock continue to go from strength to strength.”
