WALTON HERO
HAILED AS ONE OF NORTH WEST’S TOP LIFE SAVERS IN NATIONAL BRAVERY
AWARDS
AN ambulance
call centre attendant from Walton, who saved a three week old baby
in cardiac arrest by talking the caller through the CPR procedure,
could be on her way to 10 Downing Street to be congratulated by the
Prime Minister after being short listed in the annual Vodafone Life
Savers Awards.
The Awards were launched in April to honour unsung heroes behind
Britain’s most remarkable lifesaving rescues – from the emergency
services through to ordinary members of the public.
Vodafone has become an ambassador for the emergency services after
creating Life Savers six years ago as a national tribute. The
national Awards also highlight how mobile phones have revolutionised
the vital link between the public and the emergency services when
minutes matter - now becoming an essential part of anyone’s first
aid kit.
Roma Cunnah, who was nominated by her control room supervisor at the
Northwest Ambulance Service, has now been short listed in the North
West heat – one of 12 taking place around the UK - for her pivotal
role in saving a baby’s life.
The control room supervisor at the Northwest Ambulance Service knows
that all her call takers do a fantastic job.
But according to Bridie Pearce, the professionalism of one of her
team. Roma, deserves special mention.
Roma was on duty when she took a call reporting a three week old
baby in cardiac arrest. Maintaining a calm and totally professional
manner, she talked the caller through the CPR procedure. By the time
the ambulance crew arrived on the scene the baby was breathing and
in recovery.
It was a particularly difficult situation for Roma as she taken a
similar call only a few days before when the baby had not survived.
Roma was congratulated by the ambulance team leader on the superb
job she had done. Now her own supervisor has nominated her for this
national award which reflects the standard of her work. Bridie adds
that Roma is a highly valued member of her team – not only a true
professional but also a bright and lively personality who brightens
the control room on a dark day.
If Roma’s entry is successful, it will go before the North West
Judging Panel – which includes celebrity Diane Modahl, plus Vodafone
UK and the Awards’ charity partner the Royal Humane Society – who
will select two regional winners to fly the flag for the North West.
And if Roma’s entry goes on to be selected as one of the Top 10
National Life Savers by the National Judging Panel – which includes
Gulf War veteran John Nichol, TV Personality Nell McAndrew and actor
Martin Kemp - she/he/they will receive a personal invitation from
the Prime Minister to a reception at 10 Downing Street in November.
“All too often people who have acted heroically tend to avoid the
limelight”, said Vodafone UK’s Julien Cozens. “We want
to make sure that acts of exceptional bravery and courage such as
Roma Cunnah’s receive the recognition they truly deserve. Vodafone
UK is delighted that Roma has been short listed in these national
awards and wish her the best of luck in the next round.”
The 10 National Life Savers will be announced later this Summer and
the Downing Street reception will take place on 8 November 2007.

From Mersey Waterfront to Silver Screen
GREENLAND
Street, Liverpool’s major new modern arts centre is working in
partnership with Tate Liverpool and City in Film (Liverpool
University) to host a free weekend of waterfront-inspired films on
14 & 15 July 2007 from 17.00 – 21.00. Tickets can be booked by
calling Tate Liverpool on 0151 702 7400, and admission is free.
Curated by Tate Liverpool and City in Film, the unique programme
will, for the first time, bring together an eclectic collection of
movies all shot in and around Liverpool’s Docks, celebrating both
the grandeur and isolation of the city’s iconic waterfront. The film
screenings are part of a series of events designed to celebrate Tate
Liverpool’s exhibition Centre of the Creative Universe:- Liverpool
and the Avant-Garde, which investigates how the city has inspired a
diverse range of artists since the 1940s and created an external
view of Liverpool.
Greenland Street’s purpose-built cinema space will play host to the
Liverpool-themed films throughout the weekend. On Saturday 14 July
visitors can enjoy The Waterfront (M. Anderson, 1950) and Letter to
Brezhnev (C. Bernard, 1985) and. Sunday’s screening will present The
Magnet (C. Frend, 1950) and Violent Playground (B. Dearden, 1958).
All screenings will be introduced by City in Film, who will also
show a 12 minute long film called Liverpool – City in Film (2006)
that takes the audience on a journey of the city’s film heritage.
Liverpool has been explored and exploited by the medium of film for
more than a century. The first recorded moving images of Liverpool
date back to 1897 when the Lumière Brothers, only two years after
their first public screening in Paris, sent one of their
cinematographers to the city. More recently the city has been
favoured for mainstream cinema and TV production due to its wealth
of historic architecture and charismatic locations.
Fiona Boundy, Greenland Street’s Director of Exhibitions and
Development said:- “We are delighted to host this fascinating
film programme at Greenland Street, so close to the waterfront which
has provided so much inspiration. The Waterfront film series will be
part of a summer of screenings at Greenland Street’s purpose built
cinema. From 4-22 July we’ll also be hosting Artprojx – a programme
of films by contemporary artists, many of which will be accompanied
by live orchestral and dance performances."
Jean Tormey, Tate Liverpool’s Education Curator Public Programmes
said:- “Tate Liverpool organises a broad and varied programme
of events to accompany our exhibition programme. We are delighted to
be collaborating with Greenland Street, one of Liverpool's newest
organisations, and City in Film, to introduce, to a new audience,
these beautiful and rarely-seen films set in Liverpool.”
