THE
REGION’S NEXT DIGITAL MILLIONAIRE?
THE Northwest
has an unparalleled history of technological and televisual
innovation:- the first computer, the first soap opera, some of the
best interactive games were all developed here. That drive for
innovation and creativity is set to take another leap forward as
Northwest Vision + Media, the film, TV and digital media development
agency, launches a series of uniqueDigital Academies to develop the
best innovative digital talent in the region.
"We are extremely excited about the Digital Academies which are a
unique venture. Not only will they uncover some of the region's top
digital talent, but they'll also support the creation of new content
production for the media industry.” says Lynne McCadden,
Managing Director of Northwest Vision + Media.
The Digital Academies are an intensive three day residential
hothouse to be held at the recently opened City Inn Hotel in
Manchester city centre. Open to creatives, entrepreneurs and
pioneers in the region, the Digital Academies will accelerate new
ideas into the marketplace and onto a screen near you. Following the
launch on Friday June 15th, competition for the 30 places is
expected to be intense.
A panel of judges from ITV, the BBC and Channel 4 will select the
ideas to be taken forward, and winners will work with industry
experts and the best of the region’s independent production
companies – Multi Media Arts, Hat Trick North, Channel M, Centini,
and All Out Productions.
Lynne explains:- “We have been superbly supported by some of
the region’s top producers including Hat Trick North and Channel M,
who will be working with us to provide live briefs for the Digital
Academy. It'll be a unique partnership of employers and talent that
Northwest Vision + Media has been delighted to broker."
The successful candidates will receive professional industry advice
and coaching in the application of creative thinking, idea
development, pitching and selling. They will have bold ideas and new
approaches to creative content. On the final day everything will be
put into practice and the students will pitch their ideas to the
commissioners. And that’s not all, up to five of the Digital Academy
interns will be funded to continue their work on placement and
receive over £2,500 and expert advice to take it to market. The two
Digital Academies will take place in Manchester on:-
Wednesday 18 July 2007, Thursday 19 July 2007 and Friday 20 July
2007 = City Inn, Piccadilly Place, Manchester

NEW
ONLINE INFORMATION PUTS LOCAL PATIENTS IN CHARGE
HEALTH
Secretary Patricia Hewitt unveiled a new website, NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk),
empowering people to make informed decisions about their own health,
lifestyle and treatment options. The website lets people track
their health risk for a particular age and gender in a given
postcode. Postcodes are grouped together into high and low risks and
given a risk rating for particular types of hospital admission. For
example,
In postcodes such as Liverpool, L69 3EB the health risk rating for a
35 year old man for kidney failure is 1 in 63 - twice the national
average of 1 in 122. In contrast, postcodes such as Blackpool, FY4
2DP have a 1 in 161 risk rating. The Blackpool postcode is in a low
risk category for coronary heart disease with less than half that in
Liverpool. (1 in 213 as opposed to 1 in 103). Women are much
more likely to have kidney failure if they live in a street such as
Liverpool’s Old Hall Street, (1 in 84) where the national average is
1 in 238 but it is almost unheard of in a street such as Blackpool’s
Squires Gate Lane at 1 in 586. Their chance of breast cancer in the
Blackpool postcode is higher than the national average at 1 in 49 as
opposed to 1 in 63 in Liverpool’s, better than the national average
of 1 in 57.
The website includes ratings on hospital waiting times, cleanliness
and readmission figures and for the 1st time allows patients to give
immediate online feedback about their treatment and experiences.
It is even possible to look at which hospital you might prefer to
attend based on your preferences, for instance if you want single
sex wards, or if waiting time, travelling times or MRSA incidences
are critical choice factors.
Information is provided for every age group with tips for safe
drinking, a cost calculator and tips on giving up smoking, and
details of how to score a child’s Five-a-Day choices.
Key features of the new site include:
· Authoritative information on common conditions and procedures
· Hospital scorecards enabling patients to decide where to go for
treatment
· A patient feedback function for the public to comment and rate the
quality of the treatment they receive
Dr Tom Coffey, GP and Chair of New Health Network, said:- “I
welcome this new website because it will mean that patients and I
will be using the same authoritative clinical information. It will
also give me a comprehensive library of patient information leaflets
that I can print out in my surgery and during consultations.”
