SOUTHPORT FLOWER SHOW
(Part 1 of 2 reports)

DESPITE the inclement weather, Southport’s four day Flower Festival, held over the 16 August to 19 August 2007, was enjoyed by an above average number of attenders, determined to make the best of the wide variety of attractions on offer. The standard of floral exhibits was excellent.

The imaginative interpretations of this year’s theme ‘Music’ was thrilling, from the bubbling fountains and bold displays of the outside gardens, to the exciting indoor large gardens; from the masses of exquisite blooms and plants to the floral art exhibits. All must have been products of much dedication: what a feast of talent there was to appreciate. How hard it must have been to chose the winners!

In the arena and throughout the grounds was a wide range of entertainments were on offer, from impressive bands and groups and individual performers running the gamut from classical to jazz, pop and aboriginal: something to please nearly everybody.

On Ladies Day a dazzeling Fashion Show was run and what a show it was... As usual too, there were craft displays and wares for sale and an interesting assortment of traders offering a range of products. Numerous entertainers of many shades, both human and animal, clowns, dancers, magicians, birds of prey and dogs with their skilful handlers, even a circus tent for the children added to the fun. Radio Merseyside, Dune FM and Century FM flew their flags and the Liverpool Capital of Culture 08 Bus told of pleasures to come.

The scope for satisfying one’s hunger and thirst was enormous and the facilities were clean and well run. The services for safety and welfare were efficient, keeping the show moving smoothly. Even the inevitable mud around the ground was relieved by board walks or chippings.

We hope our photographs will give a taste of what was on offer to those who didn’t get to the show and revive pleasant memories for the many visitors. Here’s to next year, in Liverpool’s reign as Capital of Culture!

Thanks to all who worked so hard to achieve this year’s success.
