Liverpool's liner landing stage
THE first ship
to moor at Liverpool's new cruise liner landing stage, was the
Nassau registered Seven Seas Voyager, which spent this Sunday on
Merseyside; with over 500 passengers visiting the city. Liverpool
used to be thoroughly accustomed to great liners but by the 1960's
traffic dwindled and after the removal of the old landing stage, by
the Pier Head, in 1972, bigger ships could no longer drop passengers
directly onto the quayside. Consequently those liners, which have
been visiting in recent years, have had to disembark and embark
visitors by tender or ferry at the ferry landing stage. Now the new
stage restores the direct landing. It is expected that many more
liners will visit the port, especially given Liverpool's reign as
Capital of Culture in 2008.
This visit was a dress rehearsal for the
official opening on 21 September 2007, when the very special guest
will be the, soon to be retired, gracious lady, the QE2. Merseyside
awaits her return visit with great pleasure.
