LIVERPOOL SCHOOLS TAKE UP INVESTMENT CHALLENGE......
BUDDING young
investors from Liverpool schools have entered a national competition
to invest real cash in the stock market. The Shares4Schools
competition gives Year 12 students the opportunity to learn about
the real world of business, bringing business studies and economics
to life.
This year marks the 5th year of the investment competition. Starting
with an investment fund of £1,500, the students are competing in a
national as well as regional league to achieve the highest fund
value over the period of the competition.
Local schools taking part include:-
· King David High School, Childwall Road
· St Michael's High
School, 14 Cranmore Avenue, Crosby
· Hilbre High School,
Frankby Road, Wirral
· Wirral Grammar
School for Boys, Cross Lane
· Sacred Heart
Catholic College, Liverpool Road, Crosby
Regardless of their final position, the school will retain the final
value of their investment to roll over into the next year’s
competition, to use on specific projects or for improving resources.
During the competition, teams are given support and advice from the
competition’s organisers, retail stockbroker, The Share Centre. All
investment decisions will be made by the team and carried out by
either of their two nominated teachers.
The national winners will receive the Shares4Schools trophy and will
take part in a special winner’s tour of the City of London,
including visiting a City dealing room, lunch with City commentators
and Fund Managers. There will also be regional prizes awarded for
the top schools in each area of the country.
Commenting on this year’s competition, Shares4Schools’ Ian Benning
said:- “We welcome the schools into this year’s competition.
For us it’s about encouraging people to think about their finances
and to promote how straightforward investing can really be. With a
record number of schools entered for Shares4Schools, this year's
competition looks set be a great success.”

Unnecessary delay to customers’ Mail
CWU’s
North-West Regional Secretary has accused Royal Mail of causing
unnecessary delay to customers’ mail in the aftermath of the current
dispute.
The CWU claim they have evidence that there are millions of items
being deliberately held back as part of a backlog built up during
the current dispute. This they believe is because Royal Mail has
adopted a dogmatic approach to the use of postal workers following
any dispute. Royal Mail’s public position is that they are
doing all within their power to get the service back on its feet,
the backlog cleared and the restoration of the service to the
public.
In reality they are refusing to utilise all available resource or to
use staff on overtime if they took part in the dispute to restore
the service as soon as possible. Instead they have opted to
use untrained agency and casual staff at great expense, the net
result of which is that customers mail is delayed longer than is
absolutely necessary.
Royal Mail does not seem to have learnt from previous experience,
that the over use and reliance on casual and agency workers in
sensitive areas such as the postal service only undermines the
security of the mail. Only today Royal Mail in Liverpool has
advertised for casuals to deliver mail with an immediate start on
the proviso that they can show proof of identity and residency.
North West Regional Secretary Carl Webb said:- “There is a
concerted effort being made by the CWU in the North West to rebuild
relationships following the dispute.
Royal Mail have committed to
this on paper via a joint statement, however it would appear that
elements of Royal Mail management in the North West are intent on
aggravating postal workers at the expense of the customer.
I
now call upon Postwatch the postal services user group, and the
regulator POSTCOMM to look into this as a matter of urgency in the
interest of restoring the service to normal in advance of the
Christmas pressure season.” |
