Driver killed with single bullet
WITH
only days to the official launch of the Capital
Of Culture, this shocking event has once again brought Merseyside
into the spot light, but for the wrong reasons. According to
Merseyside Police "At about 9.15pm on 5 January 2008, 35 year
old man, was hit in the head as he drove a gold Land Rover along
Mackets Lane in Halewood. A bullet was shot through the windscreen
and the man's car then crashed into a Ford Focus. He died at the
scene shortly after paramedics arrived. The 36 year old male driver
of the Ford, who was not connected with the shooting, suffered minor
injuries."
Ch Supt John Young of Merseyside Police told the media that:-
"There is a gun crime problem, but it's something we're working very
hard to eradicate. We don't think that it is a random shooting. At
this moment in time I wouldn't really want to speculate as to the
motive, but it certainly doesn't appear to be random. We don't think
it's been an expert gunman as our firearms officers say they
couldn't attempt to shoot someone like that."
Merseyside Police Officers are now carrying out house-to-house
inquiries and looking at CCTV footage as part of the investigation.
Any witnesses and anyone with information in relation to the
incident is asked to contact the Merseyside Police Guncrime hotline
on 0800 458 1211, or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Shooting - Solway Street / Alt Street, Toxteth
POLICE on
Merseyside are investigating a shooting incident in the Toxteth area
on Sunday, 30 December 2008, in which a man suffered an injury to
his shoulder.
According to Merseyside Police:- "At approximately 7.15pm,
police received reports that a man had been injured in the Solway
Street area of Toxteth. He was taken to a hospital where he is being
treated for a wound to his shoulder, thought to have been the result
of a shooting. The victim, a 22 year old Liverpool man, is not
currently co-operating with police.
Police found a black Ford Focus on nearby Alt Street, which looks to
have a number of bullet holes in it, and the area around Alt Street
and Solway Street has been cordoned off while officers carry out a
forensic and fingertip examination of the scene and the car.
A high visibility policing operation is ongoing in the area to
reassure the public. Enquiries are also continuing in the locality
to try and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Though the investigation is in the early stages, this is thought to
have been a targeted attack."
Any witnesses and anyone with information in relation to the
incident is asked to contact the Merseyside Police Guncrime hotline
on 0800 458 1211, or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111. |
Poll shows 5 A Day is now a top New Year Resolution for
Liverpudlians
IN the wake of
Christmas and New Year indulgences, research released on 2 January
2008 reveals that over two thirds (68%) of Liverpudlians are
planning to make eating their 5 A DAY a healthy New Year’s
resolution.
Surprisingly, results showed that 40% of people in Liverpool
surveyed mistakenly believed that a baked potato counts towards
their 5 A DAY, whilst 16% think they can achieve their 5 A DAY by
taking a multi-vitamin tablet.
In addition, findings also revealed that only a small proportion of
people would consider eating frozen (8%), tinned (4%) or dried (2%)
fruit and veg as an alternative to fresh produce despite them also
counting towards your 5 A DAY.
Whilst the survey does show that the majority of people see eating
five portions of fruit and veg a day as a simple and easy way to
make improvements to their daily diet, New Year’s resolutions may
not always be that easy to keep. Therefore, the research also looked
at reasons why people may not be getting their all important five
portions of fruit and veg a day.
· Twenty-four percent thought that it may be too expensive,
especially fresh produce.
· Twenty-six percent said they may not have time for the preparation
and cooking of fruit and veg.
· And, seventeen percent think fussy eaters might not be keen on the
taste of some fruit and veg, and therefore, resist trying to eat it.
However, 5 A DAY ambassador and Eastenders actress Patsy Palmer
disagrees:- “To save on cost I always buy in-season fresh
fruit and veg, or frozen and tinned, especially if I fancy something
a bit more exotic.
I don’t let
time stop me or my kids getting their 5 A DAY either as I can whip
up a tasty stir fry in minutes and my kids love snacking on dried
fruit. And, for adding more taste try using garlic, onions, herbs
and spices, which can help to can make the most boring dishes
delicious.”
One extremely important point that most of those surveyed agreed on
was how vital it is to eat our 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.
78% of Liverpudlians
plan to eat more fruit and veg because they’re packed with vitamins
and minerals and 70% believe they are an excellent source of fibre
and antioxidants essential to aid good health and help to reduce the
risk killer diseases such as heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
The results of this survey show that 5 A DAY is still a simple and
relevant health message for all. Eating a variety of 5 portions of
fruit and veg every day is something we can take on board and
hopefully stick to throughout the year.
