Wheel & Walk For 2008
IT'S that time
of year again when many of us are making New Year’s resolutions to
get fit and give more to charity, and the MS Society is offering
people in the North West the chance to do both in 2008. More
than 80,000 people in the region alone are affected by multiple
sclerosis (MS), the most common debilitating condition of the
central nervous system in young adults. The MS Society is inviting
people to take part in the fully accessible fundraising event, Wheel
& Walk, around the streets of Manchester in March.
Diana Gornall, Head of Community and Events Fundraising at the MS
Society said:- “Wheel & Walk is so much fun simply because it
includes everyone regardless of age or ability. Everybody can be
involved whether they are fully mobile, making use of a wheelchair
or mobility scooter, or still in their pram or pushchair!”
The event will take place over 6km on Sunday 30 March and passes
famous Manchester landmarks such as the Town Hall and Albert Square,
Manchester Cathedral, Urbis and many more. There may also be
the chance for top fundraisers to walk down the famous Coronation
Street cobbles, subject to filming.
Manchester’s Wheel & Walk is part of MS Life, the MS Society’s
national convention - a full weekend of events providing information
on every aspect of living with MS including home, lifestyle,
leisure, employment, medical research, treatment and support.
MS Life takes place on 29 to 30 March 2008 at Manchester Central
(the new name for G-MEX). Wheel & Walk will be held Sunday 30
March 2008 at 9.30am starting and finishing at Manchester Central.

RUN
IN LIVERPOOL RACE AND HELP TO FIND CURE
IF you are
looking for the perfect reason to get into shape, then why not join
other local people who have already signed up to help a leading
charity find a cure for muscle diseases by running in the
forthcoming Liverpool Half Marathon.
The Regional Office of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is asking
local runners to enter the event and to get sponsored for running or
to contact them for sponsorship forms if they have already entered.
In return, everyone who raises funds can claim some great sportswear
rewards and will also be sent a top quality running vest to show
support for the charity in the race. In addition, whoever raises the
most sponsorship for the charity will win the choice of a Dirk Kuyt
Liverpool training top or a signed Everton football.
Says Charles Horton, Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Regional
Fundraising Manager:- “We need as many people as possible to
enter the 2008 Liverpool Half Marathon and raise sponsorship if we
are going to beat this disease. Its a great way to help others and
help yourself to keep fit. People die from the effects of muscular
dystrophy every week in the UK. Every second counts if we are to
give people with muscular dystrophy a chance in the future”.
The Liverpool Half Marathon takes place on Sunday March 2, 2008
starting at 9.30am. The race, which takes in the landmark sites of
the city, usually attracts international elite athletes, fun runners
and a host of celebrities. To run in the race to raise funds
for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, call their Regional Office on

CHEAP CHICKENS COULD COST PUBLIC HEALTH DEAR
UNISON is
warning that sub-standard poultry meat inspection and appalling
conditions experienced by battery hens could lead to contaminated
chickens entering the food chain. The drive to cut costs and
deliver the £2.50 chicken to consumers is having a dangerous impact
on standards of meat inspection in poultry slaughterhouses.
UNISON is writing this week to all the major supermarkets to alert
them to the appalling consequences of the drive towards cheap meat.
As a result of
deregulation, large poultry producers, who own both the farms and
the abattoirs, are now allowed to employ their own untrained staff
to inspect the meat, rather than the Government’s highly trained and
independent meat inspectors. Government meat inspectors will have
had 900 hours of training.
UNISON National Officer, Ben Priestley, said:- “Consumers must
be told that cheap chickens could be dangerous to health. Poultry
producers shouldn’t be allowed to inspect themselves. There has to
be an independent, rigorous inspection regime to ensure that the
meat on your plate is safe to eat.
The Food Standards Agency,
that is supposed to be the guardian of public health, is allowing
the industry to dictate how meat should be inspected and by whom.
Using untrained staff to cut costs is dangerous and irresponsible.
We are writing to all the major supermarkets this week to alert them
to the appalling consequences of cheap meat. It is the supermarkets’
responsibility to tell consumers that cheap meat equals appalling
animal welfare and sub-standard inspection.” |
