Lucie Awards photographs get show with Southport College work
A gathering of
both talent and culture was formed on the night of Wednesday, 16
January 2008, at the Latin Lounge, Southport. The venue played
hosted to a fascinating photographic night. The photography
exhibition included work from both Southport College, taken by A2
and AS Multi Media and Photographic Students on the 1st Year BTEC
National Diploma as well as work from the prestigious Lucie Awards.
The event was inspired by the vast amount of culture that is visible
in Southport and on Merseyside.
Pilsner Urquell, who
sponsored the event, due to the brands close relationship with the
Lucie Awards told us that:- “It was hard to see the difference
between the Lucie Awards prints and the local students, so high was
the standard. It has not only given the students fantastic exposure,
but the event has also allowed members of general public to view
this brilliant work for them selves. Not only did all who attended
have the opportunity to see the stunning images of the Lucie Awards,
but they also got a glimpse of the hidden talent the area has to
offer. This exhibition, we feel, has also captured the culture of
the area, not only with in the photographic work displayed by the
college students, but also thanks to the support shown by the local
people who supported the event.”
People who attended
the event also had the opportunity to voted for what they considered
to be the best piece of work from the collection of student’s
photographs. The wining photograph (above) on the night was taken by
Sean Shannon, an A-level student. Sean’s photograph was of a
staircase, and his photographic eye was inspired by Henri Bresson,
when he took the photograph. This photograph, that was taken in
Southport, was not only of an extremely high quality, that most
professional photographers would have be please to have taken, but
also fantastically printed, with good tonal ranges.
Yvette Heddon, the course leader and head of Photography at
Southport Collage told us:- “This is the first year the
collage has run a BTEC National Diploma in Photography in years. It
was a tremendous loss to the area when the course closed, but now we
are running it again, the standard of our AS and A-level students
can be broaden, that bit further. As you can see the standard of our
students is now extremely high and my self and Bernard Bradley, one
of our lecturers, are keen to encourage our students to promote
their talents. Events like this are ideal building blocks for them
in their educational development and for building up a body of work
for their professional portfolio, when they leave.”
The whole event was a massive success and the work from the college
helped to remind people who attended what an amazing standard of
work is being produced by Southport students each day.

Xtra Factor Host and Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton urges you to go
without something
SHUNNING the typical celebrity
lifestyle of indulgent dinners and glam parties, TV and radio
personality Fearne Cotton will be going without food, for 24 hours,
over the weekend of March 14-16, as she raises money for the
children of Chennai, India whilst taking part in the UK’s largest
youth fundraising event, the World Vision 24 Hour Famine.
The World Vision 24 Hour Famine has, over the past 22 years, raised
over £20 million for children and young people in the developing
world. This year funds raised from the campaign will make a
life-changing difference to 2000 street children in Chennai, India,
who live in danger of abuse and exploitation and go without many of
life’s basic needs such as clean, safe water, shelter or regular
nutritious meals.
World Vision supporter and Ambassador for the 24 Hour Famine, Fearne
Cotton said:- “I am really excited to be working on World
Vision’s 24 Hour Famine campaign and I’m hoping that as many kids as
possible from across the country will get involved. World Vision is
doing a vital job that doesn’t just improve the lives of people in
need, it transforms them. This year we are asking you to go without
something important for one day so that we can help get kids in
Chennai, off the streets and instead give them the opportunity of a
better, safer life and future.”
