Lucie Awards photographs get show with Southport College work
A gathering of both talent and culture was
formed on the night of Wednesday 16 January 2008 at the Latin
Lounge, Southport, as it played hosted a photography exhibition.
This exhibition had stunning work produced for the Lucie Awards, a
very prestigious photographic award. Not only that but local up
and coming talent also got a helping hand with the exhibition of
work produced by Southport College photographic students. It was
hard to tell whose work was whose, so high was the standard.
Pilsner Urquell who sponsored the Lucie Awards and also the Latin
Lounge night told us at the end of the night as we snapped a few
photos that:- “We are very pleased to see the talent
demonstrated in this body of work produced by the local students.
This is a credit to your area. We are also pleased to see the
general public taking the opportunity to view this brilliant work,
both the award winning pieces and the local students. It gives
local people a glimpse as to what hidden talent can be found and
what standard that talent is. We are very pleased with the event
and that it has been extremely successful. Sadly local students
from the collage could not attend as they are too young, but from
the looks of it, some might soon find them selves in time entering
awards like the Lucie Awards!”
Guests who attended the event voted for what they
considered to be the best piece of work taken by the collection of
students. The best work considered by the guests was taken by Sean
Shannon, an A-level student. His photograph
(Above)
was inspired by Henri Bresson, was taken locally. It
was a simple photograph of a staircase, but it had stunning tonal
qualities, in the printing and the lighting. Also the focus was spot
on, both with the film grain in the printing, but also in the
execution of the shot on the location.
.
Southport Collage’s Head of
Photography, Yvette Wheddon told us that:-
“This type of event is a fantastic opportunity for
students to broaden their horizons and get external feedback on
their work. Southport is a fantastic breeding ground for many
talented photographers and it is thought competitions and events
like this that helps us, to not only create awareness to student’s
of their talents, but also to the general public. The collage has
for some time missed out on this huge amount of talent and as a
result we have now re-introduced the BTEC National Diploma In
Photography. It is hoped that the talents of are GCSE, A2 and AS
students can once again be help to develop the talents further for
years to come.”
