St
John Ambulance Invitation to Join The Team!
THIS year like
so many others, St John members are playing a key role in the events
that take place all over the UK. On Merseyside, things are getting
even busier for them and they always need help, but at this point in
time, even more than ever!So Merseyside St. John Ambulance will be
opening the doors of its flagship Headquarters in Liverpool over the
16 February 2008 and 17 February 2008 to hold more induction
week-ends for any adults who wish to become members of their
thriving organization. The courses will run from 9:30am until 4:00pm
each day at 2 Edgar St. close to the city centre. Attendance on both
days is necessary. There is ample car parking at the venue and a
light lunch will be served each day.
Commissioner of Operations, Martin Amlot, told us that:- "St.
John Ambulance volunteers provide a valuable service to the local
community. We are looking for any new recruits to join the team now,
as we are receiving an increasing number of requests for first aid
cover at events throughout Merseyside during and after the Capital
of Culture. Without your help, we cannot run the service and this is
your chance to do your bit for the community."
FULL FIRST AID TRAINING will be given to those who successfully
complete the introduction course. For an application form to reserve
a place, please contact Joan Johnson on 0151 298 2838.
Tougher Toy Standards On
The Way says a Local Euro MP!
COMMENTING on
the draft toy safety law presented last week by the European
Commission Arlene McCarthy, Labour Chair of the European
Parliament's Consumer Protection Committee, said:- "We have
been demanding tougher toy safety standards across Europe and action
on dangerous imports from China and other countries."
The draft law, issued on 25 January 2008, will now be scrutinised by
the Parliament's Consumer Protection Committee.
Arlene told us that:- "It is our job to check if it meets the
higher standards we have been demanding in the wake of recent toy
recalls and toy safety scares. We want a tough law with a tough
enforcement regime which protects children's health and safety."
Parents of young children will welcome:-
· stronger rules to protect children from suffocation and choking
risks,
· the ban on toys embedded in food or sweets and
· new powers for enforcement bodies and an obligation on them to
cooperate across Europe to crack down on dangerous toys.
Arlene McCarthy said that:- "This new law must take account of
new toy risks and the fact that 90% of our toys are imported from
China and other non-EU countries.
It must stand
the test of time and meet our demands that toy imports meet the
highest standards. Importers and brand owners must accept
responsibility and liability for placing dangerous toys on the
market.
Our objective is for Europe to lead the way on global standards for
toy safety."

Letters to Editor:- "Don't buy petrol on a certain day campaigns
do not work! An alternative to consider..."
- "HAVE your readers
stopped and taken note of this? With the price of petrol
going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. It
was only a few years back that a price increase, small
compared to recent increases, meant thousands of people took
to the streets to protest and it nearly collapsed a
government! We are now hitting 106.9p a litre in some
areas today and soon we will all be faced with paying £1.10
a litre! The oil companies and the OPEC nations
have become conditioned to make huge increases in prices and
we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS
control the market place and not sellers. Sadly, the 'don't
buy petrol on a certain day' campaign which was going around
April 2007 and in May 2007 did not work! The oil companies
just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue
to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of
an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,
whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that
can really work for this year! The UK pays the highest price
in the world for its oil, yet BP and Shell are some of the
biggest producers! Not only that but the huge amount of Tax
is crippling businesses and people's way of life without any
benefits being passed on to public transport. If more tax
raised through the cost of petrol was put into public
transport, less demand would be required for petrol and
prices would fall. So you have to ask if the government in
the UK is just helping to push prices up to pay for their
own pay rises at the cost to the economy. The only way we
are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit
someone in the pocket! Sadly, this cannot be the HM
Treasury, so the only option is to target the oil companies
themselves, by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do
that WITHOUT hurting ourselves as well! Here's the idea...
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from
the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and
BP. Also target all Tesco stations as well.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to
reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other
companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact,
we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol
buyers. It's really simple to do!!!
Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and
I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people and to lots of
newspapers like this one. If thirty people send this
information to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and
those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)
... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth
generation of people, we will have reached over THREE
MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and
pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people
will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you
guessed it... .........
So not buy at ESSO/BP or Tesco petrol. How long would all
that take? If each of us sends an email out to ten more
people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people
could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!
Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense
to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a
LITRE RANGE
It's easy to make this happen. Just fill up petrol at Shell,
Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. Boycott Today!" Philip Hollsworth.
Editor's note:- Do other readers
have other opinions. We'd like to hear from you.
